Lots of 8/10 and 9/10 albums for me this year. And very few letdowns compared with many pleasant surprises that exceeded my expectations. That has made it a great year for music imo. But for now I have zero 10/10 albums this year.
I don't have an album this year that hit me as much as Carrie and Lowell but not many albums do. Pinegrove, Hotelier, Jeff, Chance and Tribe are all fantastic albums though
I've been pretty vocal about my dislike for the Pinegrove album but I really feel like I must be missing something so I'll give it a few more spins
Nothing goes on my list without a relisten specifically aimed at placement. Currently got 26 albums ranked. Give me 20 days. Haha
Listened to it again last night and I still think it's really pretty and sounds lovely but the songs themselves don't do much for me.
Trying to make a top 100 songs of 2016 playlist for an upcoming road trip. Decided to limit each artist to a max of three songs, but then said screw it and added five songs from certain people. Means some great tunes are missing out - last cuts included Radio Silence by James Blake, I Can't Give Everything Away by Bowie, and Prima Donna by Vince Staples. Ended up without a single track from Kendrick's Untitled Unmastered either. Such a strong year for tunes.
If I do anymore than a top 10, I'll get a headache. 1. The 1975 - I like it when you sleep 2. Descendents - Hypercaffium Spazzinate 3. Bad Suns - Disappear Here 4. Green Day - Revolution Radio 5. Yellowcard - Yellowcard 6. Twin Atlantic - GLA 7. Feeder - All Bright Electric 8. Weezer - Weezer (The White Album) 9. The Naked And Famous - Simple Forms 10. Beach Slang - A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings
I felt the same way. I'll give it a relisten... didn't realize it was so well received. It was good but I didn't connect with it on any deeper level.
I have a feeling I'd like it more if I actually sat down with the lyrics, but making the time to do that is so hard. I'm almost always listening to music and multitasking. There a BUNCH of albums this year I've been meaning to do that with, quite frankly.
Same. Hotelier would've been way lower on my list if it wasn't for that compilation we put out this month. That got me reading lyrics and listening to Goodness trying to pick a song. It really grew on me after that. Next year I'm really going to dial back the quantity of stuff I'm listening to and focus on really digging into the releases I moderately enjoy.
There's some bands where you absolutely need to pay attention to the lyrics and I'd say The Hotelier and Okkervil River are two of those bands.
I'm just saying that for certain bands the lyrics are incredibly important to the overall experience. Obviously if the delivery wasn't there the lyrics wouldn't be as effective but I think for a band like The Hotelier, the lyrics are what really sets them apart and makes them so special. At least for me.
Oh, I understood what you meant. I just mean it's easy to miss the great lyrics when you're initial focus is more on the delivery. I grew up on metal. Lyrics are usually cheesy but the delivery adds a whole new dynamic to the music so I've always looked to see how the vocalists compliment the band, not necessarily what they're saying.
