I genuinely believe this year was been phenomenal for new music, at least in my own world. Not that other years aren't great, but I've had to, at one time or another, wonder if every album in my top 5 could not only be my AOTY but be considered an all-time favorite.
I'm going to be controversial and say this year hasn't been unusually good or anything. I've had one absolute 10/10 this year, and a handful of very, very good records. I don't think it's been any better than other years.
I think out of the 200 albums I listened to at least 75 of them i'd consider great. I think it's been a really rewarding year music wise
I want to see what I had for 2015. Don't remember what I picked outside of TPAB being #1 or maybe that was Kamasi Washington
I'm kind of the same to a certain extent. I think it's been an amazing year for 'really good' albums; there's so much good stuff in fact that I know I'm going to have real problems creating a definitive enough list. However, I don't think there's been as many absolute 10/10 worldies as I was expecting, especially given how many great bands/artists have been releasing stuff this year.
do you not love 8's and 9's? a record doesnt have to be a 10 for me to love it. i love everything in my top 50 and several beyond but only my top 3 even approach 10
I think if we compare 10/10s, this year is about on par with the others. 2013 had three 10/10s for me. All Scottish! That's probably my favourite year in a while.
1. The Hotelier - Goodness At this time of the year, it's harder to remember the time and place of Goodness. I have to reconnect with this already vague memory of spring and nature and seeing them in Vermont. But I remember playing it back to back, obsessed with how the album creates its own space that you feel around you and inside you. 2. Pinegrove - Cardinal 3. Jimmy Eat World - Integrity Blues 4. Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial 5. The 1975 - i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it 6. Jeff Rosenstock - WORRY. 7. PUP - The Dream Is Over 8. Mitski - Puberty 2 9. Thrice - To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere 10. Brian Fallon - Painkillers 11. Frank Ocean - Blonde 12. Touché Amoré - Stage Four 13. Saosin - Along The Shadow 14. Cymbals Eat Guitars - Pretty Years 15. Conor Oberst - Ruminations 16. Cassino - Bottlenecker EP 17. Taking Back Sunday - Tidal Wave 18. Modern Baseball - Holy Ghost 19. Beyoncé - Lemonade 20. I seriously listened to 20 albums this year. So, here's how I rank my year. This is one of, if not my favorite year for music ever at this point. View attachment 4878
i never give tens immediately, a record to me is only a ten is if it continues growing on me and never at any point dips in quality or i get tired of listening to it
Looking at my RYM I only have 30 albums that I've given 5 stars to and probably 20 or so of those are from 2002-2009
Infinity Crush - When We're Snow, The Hotelier - Home, Like Noplace is There and Hellogoodbye - Would It Kill You. All three just blow me away in every aspect and I love every song an incredible amount except for Housebroken but I can ignore that.
