are we doing a seasonal/winter holiday comp or a christmas comp?

if the latter, i think we should do the former instead, for the sake of inclusivity and also to make the comp more interesting

How about a Winter compilation? For real, I thought about this on my drive home from work (before seeing this post). We did a summer one; part of the reason we displaced our tribute-tribute-mixtape system was so we could change up the "season mixtapes".

This could allow for holiday songs AND songs about / that reminds you of winter. ie: I want to do A Long December by Counting Crows but couldn't make that fit a Christmas theme other than December...

EDIT: hit Reply and @nothingsforeverdude already had the right idea.

I mean, I know a lot of non-Christian people who celebrate the holiday. I know a lot of Christian people who blacklist the holiday for it's modern secular presence in culture. I do think the comp is kind of bleh for the people who really don't celebrate the holiday though. I agree with that. I don't want these fun little comps to be made into a religious issue though. I celebrate Christmas, but I hate the music so I won't be submitting anything unless I think of an original (which I promise, wouldn't be a stupidly cheery song. haha). I do think the comp will definitely alienate people though. But, I also don't want to be a buzzkill for those who are excited for that (not saying you are).

I'm sorry I basically just wrote down my thought process as I was figuring out a response and used it as the response. hahaha

My bad then. I find Christmas really secular so I forget.

Winter sounds great I'm so excited to hopefully put a song out now that my album is finished. Can we submit an original Christmas song?

  7. Yeah, I said "Winter Holiday" but I can take off "Holiday" completely and leave it open to songs for winter, which would obviously include holiday songs for us U.S. folk. I definitely don't want it to just be "Christmas" because I don't want to alienate anyone. And yeah, covers and originals will be allowed @ComedownMachine

I just finished my cover. It's more of a mashup cover, and it's probably the most gutsy I have been with a cover. You guys will get to hear my Australian accent (I say that like it's a good thing; get earplugs now, it's actually a warning) because I do some spoken word!

As a very vocal athiest, I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with doing holiday music. Christmas has become so secular that you don't even need to be a Christian to celebrate. But Winter is fine too if someone feels uncomfortable.

Also, I figured out what I'm doing with my end of reel cover... I'm gonna do it in a similar style to Bon Ivers newest album. Which hopefully isn't me biting of more than I can chew.

hmm yeah as someone who is a part of a different religion, i don't need to be told the effect that christmas has and the alienation it provides for people of other religions. but thanks anyways, appreciate it.

Personally, a christmas/holiday theme would alienate people who are just generally not into christmas like me. Working in retail has made the "holiday season" pretty much toxic.

A winter themed mixtape opens us up to other genres of music, and is more inclusive. People aren't pidgeon holed, or put into too small of hole.

I've already started drafting up ideas for my best of 2016 submission. I don't think anyone will pick the song I want to do, so I think I'm fairly safe in starting early.

Why can't multiple people do the same track? More than likely they'll have different interpretations of it
