  1. Wow, thanks! It's hard to not pick out all of the things I dislike about this recording, but I'm happy you think it's bangin! haha.

@Jdaniels - You've got a very cool voice, man. I feel like I get a bit of a Matt Skiba vibe at times with your inflection. I'm getting some serious deja vu of something, but really can't seem to put my finger on what this cover's reminding me of. Good job!

@InfiniteArms - We've really got a lot of cool voices on this comp, definitely adds to the overall feel of the song. I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with the song, but I like what you did with it and like the tone of your guitar a lot :D

@elemenohpe (With You Around) - Another song I'm not really familiar with! I really should check out some stuff past Paper Walls. I like the tone of your guitar a lot. I love the covers on here that utilize drums- makes me wish I still had my old set. Awesome job man! Great vox, too.

@Craig Manning - Awesome vibrato, man. Seriously. Always love hearing that, and it sounds like you have a tonn of control over it. Those ambient background vocals right before the second verse was cool, as well as the guitars in the bridge (is that a flanger effect?). I'm literally writing as I listen to these, and your guitarless vocals before the final chorus just gave me chills. Always a huge fan of counterpoint vocals, too, at the end there.

@rbbpaperwalls - Another track I don't know! Dude. Your voice is great. Really like your falsetto, the reverb on the vocals, and I'm a total sucker for piano. I really want to pick that up some day, it just makes everything sound beautiful. Half of me is wondering if I'll even enjoy YC's version of it after hearing yours heh

@nothingsforeverdude - I'm happy that I gave this one up and get to hear someone else's take on it! I like the build-up you've done throughout; the palm mutes in the beginning was a good way to start things. I like your vocal range a lot, quite soothing. Also really like what you did with the bridge there!

@elemenohpe - As soon as I saw you did this one, I've been impatiently waiting to finally get to it. One of my favorites, the guitars on-point. What did you use for the violin sounds in the chorus? Synth? I'm happy you kept things fast-paced, I cannot imagine this song being slowed down at all. I can't tell; do you physically play the drums, or are they programmed? Great job man, lots of raw emotion in there, I really dig it.

    ... More to come!

Of course, you're welcome! Haha I totally get what you mean; I'm sure all of us musicians are that way. It's super hard for me not to be overly critical over my work when comparing to what I envision, but I think you really nailed it. One of my favorites on here for sure.

@r0m4n44 - You guys are making me feel like a bad YC fan for not knowing some of these! Very cool cover, I love how things change about a minute in- that ambience, bass, and light guitars fading in and out. Same with the bridge. Dang. I really love the feel of it. Instrumentally, I get a mix of a Coasta and Anberlin vibe at times. Idk, maybe I'm totally nuts, but good job! I can see the Chris Conley comparison Brad mentioned.

@xkhiemster - Good job man! I completely forgot this song existed; I like what you did with it. There really is something to be said for a single-take recording, it always makes thing sound more pure and live.

@TedSchmosby - Another I'm not very familiar with, but I've heard it before. Really like it. The long strums :30 make things sound a lot fuller. I like the way you go back and forth between the palm mutes and the more brighter, natural strums. Things really pick up and sound awesome 2:00 in. Really like backing guitars. I liked that really subtle, quiet background vocal 4:19 in.

@rbbpaperwalls - Oh hell yeah, I managed to get through these before my girlfriend got home from work :P. I like your range- I was really impressed when you go to belt those higher vocals in the choruses, I like the way you sing "better", "forever", etc. in the choruses; very cool inflection/accent.

    Awesome job, everyone!!

  6. I just uploaded my REAL file... haha. The only thing different about it really is I added violin to the bridge.

The shitty alt bands one could be hilarious, but I ultimately voted Oldies. There could be some very interesting new takes on some classics.

Would 70's songs count as oldies??

  9. technically, yeah. if that one wins, we can figure out specific parameters as far as choosing specific eras.

If shitty bands win, you'll need to figure out specific parameters about that as well, or set out a list of bands because it's all a matter of opinion in the end.

@bradsonemanband I only just realised your username is supposed to be said "Brads One Man Band" I thought it was Brad Soneman Band. Don't ask why I thought that, I feel really stupid, HAHA

  12. Great comp, everybody! Lots of great stuff here!

  14. Hey all, just wanted to pop in and say great job on the last couple of comps! I listened to the Saves the Day and Yellowcard comps yesterday and really enjoyed them. So much great stuff on both. I've been focused on recording some original tunes lately, but I'm tempted to jump in for this next mixtape!

    Thanks for the kind words.

I played the violin using a MIDI keyboard and a free VST plugin. Then I used a MIDI editor to tidy things up. Once I got a good take, I copied and pasted it for the other ones. That way each chorus would be played the exact same and wouldn't have any weird inflections from the MIDI sensitivity.

I physically played the drums on With You Around but programmed them for The Takedown. It was my first time doing it, but luckily I had a guitar hero drum chart to go off of. I set my BPM, watched a bit of the GH video and tried to replicate it. Then ran the MIDI file through EZ Drummer so I could EQ each piece and adjust bleed/reverb. I'm very happy with how it turned out but, nothing beats ACTUALLY beating the drums... also, I found programming to be pretty tedious. I'll probably do more physical drum recordings in the future. Doesn't sound as good but it's more fun to record.

  20. If Oldies wins, what should be the cut off year? Pre-80s? 90s? 70s? What's considered oldies these days? Ha

Thanks! A cover album, there's an idea. I might do that to experiment with recording/mixing/production a bit.

Thanks! I thought about including more guitar in there, but decided it was more effective if the "Three Flights Up" motif was a complete surprise at the end.

I think it's the "Starlit Cavern" effect on Garageband. Lol. Thanks though, very glad you enjoyed it! Spent a bit of time layering all the stuff at the end.

Probably cut if off after 1970s?
