Thanks, man! A Dashboard comp would be super cool. I thought Hands Down would have fit really well into this summer comp.

I think it's a bonus track from the Vindicated single? I heard it for the first time about a month ago when it came up on shuffle during my road trip home from college, and it wasn't until the day submissions were due that I remembered hearing the song. It was a real rush to learn how the song went in an hour or two. I still don't know all the lyrics. Thanks a lot for the compliment, man. Over the past few weeks I've been trying to get comfortable with singing loudly and Dashboard is a great way to practice.

Thanks! Carrabba is great at writing catchy guitar melodies.

Thanks a lot guys. I'm not sure the Carrabba comparisons are all that justified but it's really nice to hear.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you all. I really appreciate the feedback that's offered to everyone in this thread, it's so cool. Will be posting my thoughts shortly!

Gonna call At Your Funeral now so I can mess around with it for a few days. If I don't have anything substantial by a week from now, I'm gonna drop it and let someone else take a stab because I know that's a popular one!

@marioeatworld good luck! See You was my first choice, definitely did not see it getting snatched up haha

Thanks! Last month I listened to Stay What You Are for the first time and the chorus of See You has been stuck in my head ever since. Good luck with At Your Funeral, it is also a fantastic song.

I'll have to sit this one out because I know literally 0 Saves the Day songs lol. I'll take this month to work on my own stuff and hopefully be down for the next one. That being said though I'm excited to listen to this when it comes out!

    1. @trevorshmevor - Intro: It's so cool that you did this song. The beach sounds are genius and the production makes your already great performance sound amazing. Perfect way to begin the mixtape.

    2. @snaps - You Belong With Me: An impeccable reimagining, just like your Say It Ain't So cover. Are the arrangements for these songs a collaborative effort? They don't sound contrived at all, which I find happens sometimes with Pop Goes Punk type covers. I'll be looking forward to any of your future submissions, man. No pressure.

    3. @Things So Impossible & @DashboardProfessional - You're So Last Summer: The vocal interplay is my favourite part of Taking Back Sunday and you guys did it so well. I'm also super impressed you guys can do the busier tracks just as well as the laid back thing you had going on on the Weezer comp.

    4. @elemenohpe - Smooth: I love that you go all out on your covers, man. I definitely feel your passion through songs like this. And I'm a sucker for fade-outs.

    5. @bradsonemanband - Ocean Avenue: Another chord progression that I love. I had to check out the original song to see if that was how it went, but nope, you just Mixtape'd the hell out of it. So good. Your harmonies sound great yet again. You've established a style for yourself and fits you so well.

    6. @trevorshmevor - We Are Never Getting Back Together: When the summer comp was announced, this was the first song that came to my mind, but it sounded nothing like this version (unfortunately). I can't say enough good things about this one. It retains that quirky vibe while veering off in so many cool directions. That instrumental break right before "So he calls me up..." is probably the best 10 seconds of my 2016 so far.

    7. @Craig Manning - Thunder Road: I was introduced to this song through a cover by Counting Crows and every version I've heard since has been as captivating as the fantastic lyrics allow it to be, and this is no exception. I have no problem closing my eyes for four minutes and listening to you tell me this story. So good.

    8. @InfiniteArms - Blood Red Summer: Great guitar tone on this one. I hadn't actually heard a song by this band before, so I checked this one out afterwards and I'm really digging it - and of course yours sounds great in comparison.

    9. @phillyfradet - Under the Boardwalk: Hot dogs and french fries, hell yeah. Love that chiming guitar over the distorted rhythm, and I really like the tom stuff you did at times. Definite summer vibes all the way through.

    10. @bradsonemanband - Blitzkrieg Bop: And even though you have that established style, you still have the chops to deviate from it and tear shit up. Really fun two minutes.

    11. @Benjamin Lee - Off to the Races: Wow, every instrument on here sounds fantastic. I really like the tone of your voice in the verses, and then you kick it up for a different vibe in the choruses. Really cool.

    13. @bradsonemanband - Sasha: I think this is one of my favourites by you. The subject matter fits the tone of your voice really well.

    14. @therookielot - Video Games: The effects on the guitars here are rad. Creates a real cool landscape for your voice to sing over.

    15. @elemenohpe - Stay Out: The last minute and a half of this cover slays. I think the outro shows how much you have to offer. Definitely hyped to hear some of the other stuff you do on future submissions.

Hot dogs and french fries for all

  8. I'm glad you liked my songs, @TedSchmosby! I recorded both "Ocean Avenue" and "Blitzkrieg Bop" on the due date, haha. So I'm glad people like them even though they were both incredibly rushed.

@TedSchmosby Thank you! I felt the chiming guitar helped keep the oldies feel and I'm glad it worked well with the song in the end. And yes, hot dogs and french fries for all indeed! Haha

    Things So Impossible

    Newbie

Alright here are my thoughts on the Summer Comp, which came out really well! I'm going to try to keep it concise because it's so many songs.

@trevorshmevor I love Catalyst and this was done to perfection. The intro sound effects were genius, and props to Brad for choosing to start off the comp with this song. I really wanted to do Dressed to Kill for the comp, but didn't have the time.

@snaps Great song choice! I'm psyched Tay Tay got love on this comp; especially because you chose old school Swift. As per usual, fantastic instrumentation. I always wondered what it would sound like to hear Max Bemis sing T. Swift, so thank you for that. (It's a good thing)

@elemenohpe You killed this cover. This song was a huge part of my formative years and I'm so thankful someone thought to do it. The distortion on the vocals is brilliant, and of course, you shred.

@bradsonemanband Great take on a classic Summer jam! Howie Day meets Ryan Key meets Ace Enders. The laid back tone really balances the rest of this comp. I've listened to this one a lot, so thank you. Oh, great harmonies too!

@trevorshmevor I've said it before and will say it again: you belong on a Punk Goes... album, and you'd be one of the standouts. I love the energy of this cover and similar to what I said about Brad's Yellowcard cover, this song balances the comp by being on the other, high energy, end of the spectrum. The vocals must have been super fun to perform. Job well done! Again, I'm glad T. Swizzle got so much love on this outing.

@Craig Manning Holy vocals Batman! Thank you for covering The Boss. I'm glad some people chose to perform "older" songs. I listen to this one a lot, it's just so good.

@InfiniteArms You said the surf rock vibe was unintentional right? That couldn't be more surprising to me, considering it sounds perfectly intentional. Anyway, this is really enjoyable and is a really cool take on the song!

@phillyfradet THANK YOU for doing a classic. I grew up on this song and other "oldies." This is by far the most nostalgic song for me on the comp. This is an awesome version, and a very inspired choice for the project. Again, just really happy this kind of song got chosen.

@bradsonemanband Obviously this is a great choice for a Summer compilation. The tone of the instruments is fantastic. Whatever effects you have on your voice on this particular song work really well for it. Also I really enjoy the way you sing the last "let's go"s.

@Benjamin Lee I've never actually listened to Lana Del Rey, but this cover is really dope. Ironically, the way you played and sang this makes it sound VERY much like a Weezer song to me haha. I love the emotion to put into your singing; you put real personality into it. Very well done!

@TedSchmosby DUDE. Dashboard is one of my all time favorite bands and you more than did this justice. I contemplated doing Age Six Racer for the comp, but again didn't have time, so I'm really glad someone repped DC. The whole recording sounds very, very much like the tone of a lot of Chris' B-Sides. Anyway, your voice reminds me of a younger Anthony Green, and that's something to be proud of. Your Weezer cover was one of my favorites, and I just wished the vocal level was higher on it, so I'm glad it was more up front in this one!

@bradsonemanband I really love the lo-fi tone of this recording. It absolutely makes it. This is one of my favorites on this comp, and I've never heard the real song. I just can't get over the PERFECT tone of this recording. It adds so much flavor. Super props to you.

@therookielot Never heard the original song, but I like this a lot! Has a super strong Eighties vibe. Your vocals are awesome on this! They fit so well with the instrumentation, which is also awesome.

@elemenohpe Hit the Lights is the epitome of a Summer band and this was a great cover. The best thing about HTL songs are the riffs and you destroyed them. Absolutely killed 'em. The vocals too! You really capture the youthful energy of Nick's vocals. This cover is on point, and a great ender.

@elemenohpe @trevorshmevor @bradsonemanband @phillyfradet @snaps Thanks for the kind words on our cover! I appreciate all the feedback. I thought that sticking to Adam and John's parts was the best way to keep the feeling of the song, and I'm glad people agree. My favorite parts are the shouting part my brother added in the middle of the outro, and the lead guitar melody I played right after. Coincidentally these were the last two things we added to the song, but I think they really elevate our version above being basically a straight cover as it would've been. And if I had it my way, all bands would be acoustic guitar, drums, and bass a la The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most or Damnesia hahaha.

EDIT: @TedSchmosby Woops didn't see you also commented on our cover; I didn't mean to slight you. Thanks for the kind words about our abilities!

I am going to write up some notes on the compilation. Been listening to it and enjoying it a lot. This week was just crazy. Hoping I'll have time to do that on Monday or Tuesday.

Did Counting Crows actually cover it? I only ever heard the alt in "Rain King" where Duritz just inserts the entirety of the song's lyrics (which was awesome). That's probably actually the first version of "Thunder Road" I heard, too, though it's since become my all-time favorite song. So glad you enjoyed my version! I still marvel at the lyrics to this song, so I'm glad I did them justice.

Thank you! I think the great part about a theme like this is that what constitutes a "summer song" is different for so many people. Sometimes, a summer song is a song that is explicitly about summer. Other times, it's songs with a clear summer vibe. Sometimes, the song has neither but is something someone associates with summer for personal reasons. Gives a great variety of songs with a wider range of years (I think) than any other compilation we've done. It's a fun mix, imo.

Oh yeah, for sure. You ever heard the Shim-Sham bootlegs? They used to play these annual shows at this venue in Florida where they would get wasted, banter with the audience, and play a bunch of cover songs. A few of them showed up on Underwater Sunshine, but they also covered a bunch of Ryan Adams, Oasis, Madonna, etc. I haven't listened to those bootlegs in awhile, but they were always a riot and were a great way to discover music when I was just starting to explore beyond the radio.

Of course! Some of those songs got me started on artists that I probably would have been too ignorant to check out otherwise, like Willie Nelson. I remember one of those shows had a really good version of Another Horsedreamer's Blues on it too.
