    Cursed by my ancestry

So we'll just ignore the statement he put out. I know not to trust Nicole, but his statement was made by him.

I hear you, but it seems like his statement was taking culpability for him not being responsible with the power dynamics at play with him being a celebrity in the scene. IF that is the extent of it, IMO it would be unfair to lump him in with the physical and mental abusers that have been exposed in the scene - that's the extent of my point.

Abuse of power is still abuse imo. Yeah, the years long abuse carried out by JL is worse. But it's very literally the same power dynamics. Luckily he is taking steps to never let it get that far. And when he goes through the full accountability process MAYBE he can return to the scene and we can reconsider a Pinegrove comp. But we are still very much in the middle of this situation.

Your conclusion is fair but the extent someone abuses that power is defined by the damage they cause and IMO is proportional to the damage their persona receives. If a singer winks at a girl and knows he has the power to make her swoon, it's not cool - but it's leagues away from the power exercised by Jesse Lacey. There are levels of abuse and though none are excused, not every facet of the situation is equalized.

Anyway to get this thread back on track.

I think we’ve all grown as musicians since I started contributed a few years back. I don’t think we notice that part about our journey though if we don’t have external support of the community.

Maybe we can make it so we can’t announce another comp until at least X amount of feedback has been posted. Like anyone who submits has to post feedback in order to contribute to the next one.

Says the guy that has posted sparse feedback...in my defense I feel like by the time I try and post, people are already on to the next one so I don’t think anyone pays attention. I have a few saved drafts in my Evernote lol. I promise to start posting on every comp tho.

As far as the moving the dates thing, I’m gonna be real with y’all I don’t know how to properly manage my time on this. This summer has also been dictated by my late work schedule and the fire my bipolar touches me with. I’ve been having really high energy days but it’s syphoned into the machinery of my 9-5.

That being said in a given month, How do y’all learn a song, commit each part to muscle memory and then just start recording? Like break down the week by week plz cause I felt like I coulda finished Konstantine if I woulda broke down the process better.

Yeah, if I’m being honest I was kind of discouraged by the lack of feedback on the last few comps, partivularly the originals one. It’s silly to say because I love doing the songs regardless, but I like when the thread becomes a place for us to listen and discuss the result of our efforts rather than an incentive to work on our own personal project of a particular song by a particular band and then move on. It’s tough to have one without the other, but it’s difficult to keep both up because thoughtfully commenting on the songs takes a similar amount of effort as it does to make the songs. I don’t know if there’s a quantifiable solution, but as long as people are having fun working on a song each month, that half of the project might as well be kept up

.....So what's the next comp about?

  8. I voted for Pop Jams. But I'd be happy with No Boys Allowed vol. 2 winning. I really just want to cover a Hilary Duff song. So either way... :-)

not really crazy about any of the choices other than no boys. two boring bands and a category i'd be fine with but i doubt i'd super commit to. but non-male musicians would be fun.

  10. The Drive-Thru comp may have set an interesting precedent. If we eventually do a comp for Epitaph Records and another for Hopless Records, that's plenty opportunity for people compelled to cover NFG, without the rest of us having to dedicate an entirely separate comp to them.

  11. Looks like No Boys Allowed vol 2 is winning by a landslide. Sooooo that’ll be the next one!

I’ll “officially” announce it tomorrow but in the mean time, if you wanna start calling out songs, I’ll throw them on the list in the morning.

    Up to 3 songs.
    No covers of covers.
    You know the rest.

I've changed my mind, I want to do Marvelous Things instead of Defeatist by Eisley.

I'll grab a second song though, Sprained Ankle by Julien Baker

Be kind; everyone is on their own journey.

All of you amazing musical artists need to compile a bunch of love song covers for @Jason Tate to play at his wedding. Make him a fucking mix tape...like old times! You will then need to relentlessly plug this Compilation until he gives in and says 'Fine, i'll play it at the wedding!'

how profesh does the sound quality have to be for this?

  24. Listen to some tracks off of previous compilations. Quality ranges from iPhone recordings to more professional sounding. Whatever you can do is fine.
