P.S. If no one does Summer Girls by LFO on the summer songs comp I'll be greatly disappointed.

Okay side-compilation idea: all covers of Summer Girls by LFO, see who can actually make through the whole song. y/y?

  8. i had the same idea, haha.

I seriously want us one day to do a compilation of just bands like Creed, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, etc. Bands everyones hates on, but we can try to make them sound good.

  9. I love this idea! That would be a lot of fun.

  12. I can't stop listening to this "Say It Ain't So" cover. Whoever's singing has a fantastic classic-rock sounding voice. Kinda Robert Plant-ish sometimes. I love it!

Seriously, a great choice for the opener to the comp, and a really fantastic job on the cover.

Just finished tracking drums for my summer song. Hope to knock out guitar and bass in the next couple of hours... might finish all tracking tomorrow. Glad we get 2 songs this month!

Yeah, @snaps was awesome. What's your recording setup?

Thanks man! I (Levi) did the vocals on it and did the scratch guitar tracks. Mike recorded the final guitar parts rhythm and lead and programmed the drums. Cody recorded the bass parts. We originally were going to play it like the original recording but Mike decided we should bring it up a few steps and mess around with the leads and rhythm parts. It was a blast to record it and can't wait to hop on the next one. I'd love to get on the next brand new comp. But, for now we will have to see about getting a "summer" jam together.

Apogee Duet > Macbook Pro > Logic > Logic Guitar Amps > Midi Drummer. You can do all of this in Garage Band too.

Damn, sounds good for that budget! Would you recommend the Apogee Duet? I was looking into getting on the other day. Also, how do you record your vocals?

Duet is powerful, but if you don't need two simultaneous inputs you can get the apogee one which is just as powerful and had an amazing built-in condenser mic. I just used a cheap condenser mic for the vocals.

What WOULD you need 2 simultaneous inputs for? Sorry, I'm new to this, and you're being super helpful.

I have an interface with 2 inputs. I was just trying to record guitars with my amps line out and mic'ing the cab simultaneously. I had a fuller mix in my headphones but the high gain from line in made my tone too fuzzy and I opted for simply mic'ed tones. Just one option.

I also think it's great for acoustic covers. Just one guitar and a mic. One take.

Ahh okay. I usually just go DI since I don't have the best mics.

Yo before I say anything at all, I need to avoid being really repetitive and just say right now that every single one of you that included vocal harmonies absolutely slayed them. Every single one is well placed and spot on, honestly the most stand out thing to me across the board on this comp.

    1. @snaps
Glad to see this song made the comp. It's always tough attempting to reimagine a song as popular as this one, but you guys did a great job. Very interpretive while maintaining the familiarity of the original. The recording sounds really great too, the drums boom really nicely and the guitars sound clear as day. Love the clean tones the most during that third verse, so pretty!

    2. @Chase Tremaine
The Billy Joel twist is so cool! Turned a really minimal acoustic cover of a song I'd never heard into a much more entertaining listen than it normally would have been. Can't listen to this one without my head automatically bopping along haha.

    3. @bobsheiskawy
Not huge on the original of this one, but this was a fun cover! The cajon is a really nice touch and the vocal layers are fantastic. Awesome mixing job as well!

    4. @bradsonemanband
Dude I cannot make a comment on this cover without mentioning that it sounds EXACTLY like an Acoustic EP era Early November song, which is awesome!! Anyway, awesome cover. Very relaxing, and super catchy. I'd love to be a fly on the wall from conception to completion of your covers -- it's insane to me how good you get things to sound in such short amounts of time. Also, "one-two-wee-zer" lol

    5. @harveyn590
Love how raw this cover is! Sounds like it's probably very close to the original. Your voice works very well for this sound, this song clearly demands a lot of range and you pretty much nailed it all.

    6. @phillyfradet
This is so cool! Love the dirty punk sounds you gave this song, super different from the original and that is great. You went the creative route and it paid off!

    7. @DashboardProfessional
Love the feel of this song! If the original this... 50's inspired? Such a fun sound. You've got a great a voice, between this and the MSC cover it's clear that you're able to adapt really well to whatever it is you're playing. Love the "da da's" in the bridge leading into that falsetto. The light use of synth in the background is a really nice touch, really adds some depth!

    8. @TedSchmosby
Very nice! Feel some emotion going put into this cover. Perhaps my favorite parts is the electric guitar in the bridge, really pretty sounding. Really like the choice to make it more of a background sound than have it be at forefront. This song sounds like you're just sitting in a living room playing this song for a group of friends, and for that reason it's got a very endearing element to it.

    9. @Things So Impossible
Man. I just cannot say enough good things about this cover. I've never heard the original and now I don't care to. This song is so catchy, and you really have such a great voice. Like I said in the MSC cover, it's so unique in the best way. Really awesome guitar work, the finger picking and harmonies mix together really well and that synth in the bridge was a cool addition. If nothing else, please keep doing these comps haha. Could listen to this and your last cover all day long.

    10. @Patterns in Traffic
Impressive guitar work! This whole cover is really well mixed. You've got a great voice, it's really interesting hearing it in this setting in comparison to the original song we got from you a couple of comps back. Sounds like you had a lot of fun recording this one!

    11. @elemenohpe
Damn dude, I don't feel like there is anything I can't say that would do just if to amount of time and effort this probably took you. You really went all in on this one! The guitar work is off the charts, but having heard your stuff before, it does come as a surprise. The new gear sounds great too, this was a perfect way to break it in! Whatever it takes for me to enjoy a 7 minute Weezer song -- you've certainly got it. Wonderful stuff!

Sidenote: the only originals I knew going into this were Say It Ain't So, We Are All On Drugs, and Thank God For Girls. I'm really not a big Weezer fan. That I like this comp so much given those facts is a true testament to how good you all did!

  24. Sidenote #2: I can't help but imagine the family DashboardProfessional and Things So Impossible come from as being this ultra musical super family where everyone is amazing and has had musical success at some point in their life or are being groomed for it. Like what are the chances of having two naturally awesome singers/guitar players as your kids hahah

If you're recording the acoustic with two different mics, or recording the kick and recording the snare, etc....
