  1. I finished learning/recording/mixing my song in the 2 hour gap I had earlier today. Hopefully it doesn't show... haha.

I'm currently uploading everyone's songs right now. After that, I'll put them in a lovely order, and thennnn I'll post the compilation here for everyone! Give me a few minutes :-)

Gave a quick listen through the tracks to get an idea of what everyone else did and it sounds so good! I'll have to give it a proper listen at work tomorrow but seriously I can already say good job everyone, another well done comp.

  5. Just finished my first listen, great stuff everyone! Will be sure to jam it some more at work tomorrow and post some thoughts. Definitely gonna have to check out the original songs at some point too because I only know like 3 of these covers haha

    1. @snaps - Great job. Bridge is extra dark like the lyrics. Your lead lines were really good too. Those bends have feels!
    2. @Chase Tremaine - Even without all the layers this is a fine cover. Great mashup of the Billy Joel tune with the Weezer cover! Really cool touch.
    3. @bobsheiskawy - Yeah, I still don't like this song. Haha. I liked the drums. Almost feels like a busker performance with the lo-fi drums. Did you use any plugins for the piano or was it a keyboard? I've been trying to find a good simple piano plug-in.
    4. @bradsonemanband - Man that chorus sounds great. The layered vocals sound really well together. You've got a unique voice and know how to harmonize with it. Nice, straightforward acoustic rendition.
    5. @harveyn590 - One of my fav Pinkerton tracks (this and Across The Sea which I was disappointed didn't make it). Vocals are very Rivers-ish... smooth changes in and out of falsetto, shouting, etc. Adds a lot of character atop the guitar arrangement.
    6. @phillyfradet - I dunno what you meant before... I think the distortion sounds great! I think Weezer guitar tones are part of the reason I love them so much. I also liked the distortion you added to your higher pitched background vocals. Makes the harmonies sound like they were run through a fuzz pedal. Nice job.
    7. @DashboardProfessional - Fantastic cover. Vocals are excellent, mix is balanced, synth is a great touch. Very professional sounding.
    8. @TedSchmosby - Lyrically this song fits your fragile, acoustic style really well. I like how you traded the raucous aggression for somber desperation. The ending is fantastic (starting at the layered guitars). Great interpretation!
    9. @Things So Impossible - Amazing vocals. Wonderful strumming arrangement and the harmonics sound awesome layered over. Killed it.
    10. @Patterns in Traffic - Another really amazing cover. Mix sounds balanced, every instrument is clear. The solo is A+ man, some of the most fun guitar work on the comp. Vocals are also layered really well.

Everyone did really fucking fantastic. That was a great listen. I'll def be revisiting while I'm doing housework today.

    11. @elemenohpe - I was on the fence about picking this song until I found a video of some guy playing all 4 guitars. I put an MP3 of the song as a track and started picking apart what this guy was playing. Then I began dubbing over the original song. After 3-4 days of just guitar work I deleted the MP3 and then started adding other instruments. During this month I bought a new interface (which I used for this recording), a midi keyboard (because I blew up my electric keyboard after I did the first piano takes for Anonymous. that's why piano doesn't return for the last part of the song) and an electric drumkit. I am by no means a drummer but I had a lot of fun making my own "beats" to go over my cover. Oh, and those sweeps at the end were recorded at half speed. I had to cheat to get them to sound clean... I was making way too much string noise when I tried recording at song tempo.

  7. Thanks a lot, dude!

is it the same for you? Prestigious

thanks for the feedback! i figured a lot of people still wouldn't like the song, but it's so out there and nonsensical and i love it haha. the drums are actually cajon hits i sampled from a few songs from my band's album, so it definitely has more of that live/lo-fi feel (especially since i built the whole part in logic and my rhythm isn't the greatest haha). the piano's a yamaha mx49 on the default grand piano setting recorded through an alto speaker with a blue yeti microphone (i also used one of the organ sounds, but i don't remember which off the top of my head). nothing other than that. sorry i can't help with a plugin. i'm sure there's someone around here or in the songwriting and home recording thread who might be able to point you in the right direction, though.

    1. @snaps - The moment the full band comes in at the beginning of the song, I knew I had to put this song first. Such a rad cover!
    2. @Chase Tremaine - Throwing in a little bit of Billy Joel into this was a very cool little twist. When I first saw your email with the song title, I was so confused, haha. But I get it now! :-)
    3. @bobsheiskawy - This is a really fun song, and you guys kept that vibe. Great cover!
    4. @bradsonemanband - Originally, my mission was to make this newer Weezer song sound like a Blue Album-era Weezer song. Unfortunately though, I just couldn't find the time to actually get it done. So yesterday, I had a two hour block of nothing to do so I learned the song and recorded it acoustic. I'm pretty happy with it!
    5. @harveyn590 - I love this song. The original is great, and your cover did it justice. Your voice works really well for this song too.
    6. @phillyfradet - I really like how dark you made this song sound. The distortion and everything on it sounds awesome.
    7. @DashboardProfessional - Another great song by you! Your voice is awesome. I didn't know this song, but I was singing along with yours near the end!
    8. @TedSchmosby - Like elemenohpe said, the fragility of this cover is fantastic. This is one of my favorites on here.
    9. @Things So Impossible - I love this. Your voice is really nice to listen to. I don't know the song, but I'm loving this!
    10. @Patterns in Traffic - I always love your covers, and this is no exception. The recording is great. It sounds like Weezer. You pulled it off really well!
    11. @elemenohpe - This must have been hard to do! Bravo for conquering it! Recording 7 minute long songs is no easy task. You really slayed those leads! Shit!

Great job everyone! At first I was stressing out because I usually get at least a couple covers well before the due date, but this time around, I got almost everything in the last 48 hours, haha. I thought this was going to be a really small one, like the Modest Mouse comp, but you guys really pulled through. 11 tracks is perfect! 11 great tracks!

The next compilation will be MIXTAPE: Summer Songs. I'll officially announce it later this week, after we let Weezer shine for a little bit. But get brainstorming on what you wanna do. Feel free to pick 2 songs if you'd like.

Thanks for the feedback. Mike, Cody, and I had a great time putting this together.

  11. Thanks! I really appreciate that. I was really impressed by your cover. Pulling off a 7+ minute track with multiple movements is not an easy task, but it sounds fantastic and makes a great closer. Really strong guitar work throughout as well.

  12. Thank you! I usually try to switch up the instrumentation or put my own flavor into my cover songs, but as I got more acquainted with this song and picked apart all of the different parts it became a fun challenge to try to recreate all of those layers. Might have also had something to do with the fact that I didn't start working on this very seriously until the final week, so I didn't have much time to experiment. I did change it up a bit by throwing some Europe into the solo/outro haha.

Here I am complaining that I only left myself a week to record my cover, and you somehow crank out yours in a couple of hours. And it sounds great, as usual! I really enjoyed hearing a more stripped-down cover from you. Even without a lot of layers and production, you met the high standards of the rest of your output. This isn't a Weezer track that I would have thought to revisit, but after hearing your cover it got stuck in my head and made me want to go back and take another listen to the original.

I liked yours a lot @bradsonemanband. Only thing I would've liked to hear, is for you to jump up and project on like the last, 1 or 2 choruses, while keeping the same harmonies from before, but that was obviously totally your call. Still really enjoyed it.

  15. thanks dude! and yeah, i thought of that too, but i couldn't make up my mind if i wanted to do that or just keep the tone the same throughout the whole song. unfortunately, i didn't have much time to experiment to see which way i liked better. i did all the vocals in one or two takes, and then i had to call it done and leave again, haha. i'm glad you liked it though!

Would like to say you all sounded great on the Originals pt2 mixtape also.

Took me awhile to make the switch over here after AP died.

Don't think I'll be hopping in because y'all would put me to shame, but I am excited for the summer songs nonetheless.

  21. I feel like I'm gonna have to draw a band and song out of a hat and just stick with it or something haha. The summer theme can just go so many ways, almost too many options!

Just to reiterate what I said earlier, after giving it a proper listen, everyone did a fantastic job. I'm actually hearing some of these songs for the first time (i.e. I haven't heard many of the originals) so this was a great way to be introduced to the Weezer catalog I haven't explored yet.

As for the summer comp, I have one idea for now, it's not necessarily a "summer song" but always reminds me of summer, so hopefully that works if I stick to that!
