Your samples always sound really full... more convincing of an actual kit. My EZDrummer2 stuff sounds so stale in comparison. I may be checking that out. Thanks.

EDIT: I didn't use EZDrummer for my Paramore cover. I played my electric drums directly into my interface. I only use EZDrummer when I don't think I can play the song myself.

  6. Let me know if you get it and I'll send you the samples I use.

Pretty disappointed that I don't see a submission of For A Pessimist I'm Pretty Optimistic... that was going to be my second song choice if it wasn't already claimed.

  8. I've participated in nine of these, and been the closer in four. I can feel the pressure.

Glad someone else took on That's What You Get because I haven't gotten to my second and third covers yet this month, life is kind of hitting me in the face right now.

Can't wait to listen to these!

What is the signal path for your drums usually when using EZdrummer? I always use the multi-channel out and mix all parts of the kit separately with EQ, comp etc. I find that you get way better results that way than using the default single channel-output.

Next Show - Foals April 22nd

Figured I'd leave my thoughts this time around. Just as a disclaimer, I'm not overly familiar with the majority of these songs.

    Ugly Mug - Interlude: Holiday:
Considering how quickly you said you put this together it's a fun way to open the album. It has the raw, yet produced sound if that makes sense.

bradsonemanband - Pressure: I'd consider this the first "real" song on the album and it does a great job of getting the pace of things up. Makes me anticipate a more up-tempo compilation this time around. As always, great job!

thesoftskeleton - All I Wanted: We're 3 songs in and I still don't know any of these songs well haha. This was an interesting one. It almost sounded like I was in the bathroom at a venue but could still hear the band playing. Super weird explanation but if you've been in that situation you know exactly what I mean. Not sure if/how that was done on purpose but it's something cool and different I've never really heard, gives it a completely different atmosphere, almost creepy. I like.

elemenohpe - That's What You Get: This track really stood out for the lead guitar work imo. Loved the tone on it.

t_papaccio - Misguided Ghosts: The first acoustic track! I've only heard the actual song a few times but from what I can tell you did a great job of giving it that laid back, acoustic vibe.

hermanthehermit - The Only Exception: If Paramore was a chill, folky singer-songwriter they would release albums worth of songs like this haha. The strings were a really nice touch too, very well done!

ricklightning - Ain't It Fun: Finally a song I know well. Not an easy one to take on either. Loved the part where the bass and drums kicked in, really filled things out. Got some Brand New vibes in the last chorus.

Damien Davies - Decode: Back to the songs I don't really know well. The effects gave the track a really atmospheric vibe to it, otherwise, it was a good take on song. I think what I liked about it most was that if I heard this with no context I would have NO idea it was a Paramore song.

Jdaniels - Misery Business: I dabbled with Misery Business before settling on Ignorance and gave up because I just couldn't figure out what I wanted to do with it. I had envisioned something like what you did but I just couldn't get it done. Needless to say, I'm impressed. Your voice lent itself really well to changing the overall vibe of the song, less poppy which I enjoyed.

redwing91007 - Ignorance: I need to work on my mixing/mastering a lot more. Ended up losing a lot of the top end on the guitar and bass with the compression it seems. Still had a lot of fun with this. It's the first time I've covered a song I wasn't completely obsessed with before diving in. I'll ask again, please give me harsh, constructive criticism!

xkhiemster - Emergency: Having the piano on the closer was nice, I'm pretty sure it was the only track with any piano.

    Can't wait for next month!

Due to processing constraints, I had been using the single channel. I use a budget laptop (a ~US$350 HP laptop, with Reaper) so a lot of power is eaten up processing the multiple tracks of guitar, vocals and bass with effects (each track has 2-3 effects and when you're 20+ tracks deep those 1-3% bits of processing really add up).

This month I bought a POD 500X so I won't be using all my CPU's processing on guitar/bass/vocal effects nearly as much... from here on I'll be using the multi-channel setup for EZD (or trying out what bradsonemanband suggested) whenever I don't think I can play it live with my electronic kit.

Eccentric garage punk is my calling card

Its because there isn't anything unique about the musicality of the song that allowed me to turn out the cover in less than a couple hours.

The only thing I took multiple takes on were the vocals, and in the end I ended up butchering them with a filter anyway hehe

Talking about pressure! I feel like Brad either loves me or hates me putting my song first on the last three comps I've been on.

  14. Your songs make great intros I guess!

It's actually part of my elaborate plan to only do intro tracks that already feel like intros in order to get more FaceTime with the listeners and ultimately become a famous rockstar

  16. I totally missed the Best-of-2016 post but daaaaang your cover of "Open Casket" is FREAKING INCREDIBLE

Sucienfiakfbeg im blushing so much I want to die. Hahaha

That cover meant a lot to me personally cause I used it to gage my growth as a musician. IIOI has always been a reference point for comparison. So for you to say I did a good job makes my day entirely. Thank you so much!

Unless I have a particular idea, or it's an artist I've wanted to cover for one of these comps, next month I might not participate. I feel like I need to creatively reset.

I know that we're trying to stray away from the straight white male artist demographic, but jeeze do I want to do a menzingers comp.

  22. Oh are we still trying to diversify? I may or may not already have a collab cover of Mitski's "Francis Forever" in the works.

(I'm also already planning to do Tegan and Sara at some point)

  23. The next comp will be a band. The one after that will be a mixtape, and I'm thinking for THAT we should make it "Ladies Night" or something like that, where we all just cover female artists.

I like the idea of a Ladies Night compilation.

  25. (but just because we do a ladies night comp doesn't mean we shouldn't also do tributes of female artists)
