Man, this is absolutely all over the place in the BEST way. It actually does feel like a movie soundtrack which is really cool, just that it's one guy genre hopping instead of different artists lol. Such a big smile on my face on all the rapping songs, I can't get enough of that shit. Makes me so happy that he's still got it, Talk My Shit and Yoshinoya in particular. Songs like like the opener, Got to Be, In the Night and especially A Place Where Love Goes sound like a perfect refinement to the 3.15/Atavista sound, and the new stuff he tries pretty much all works for me too. I never thought there would be a Gambino song that I immediately compare to Jimmy Eat World lmao If this is really it then I think it's a fitting ending. He's an insanely talented guy that never stays still and I'm a fan of pretty much everything he does but I do think his music is my favorite part of his artistry so I hope he comes back to it one day, regardless of what name he's doing it under. I absolutely can't wait for the tour... I hope in the spirit of this album and the finality aspect he plays a lot of old songs (BTI and earlier) too
I'm not ready to say this is better than BTI yet but it's pretty goddamn close which is already high praise coming from me. he most definitely went all out on this thing. I agree Talk My Shit is not great lmao eagerly awaiting the @tdlyon take before I can know what my opinion is though edit: nvm beat me to it lmao
People speculating that Yoshinoya is a Drake diss song and a verse of Survive is a Kanye diss. That might’ve gone right over my head. And Talk My Shit would’ve been so much better if it didn’t have that feature. Verse is like nails on a chalkboard lol
my brother in christ the first song is industrial hip-hop and the second one sounds like Weezer, cmon lol
Digital album is $4.99 on his website right now. Also vinyl pre orders for both Bando and Atavista, shipping in September. Both are standard black, I’m wondering if there will be color variants announced soon.
Haha I have to listen to this a lot more to give a more informed take but I hope my first impression didn't disappoint Personally he will never top BTI for me because that's my personal favorite hip-hop album of all time but this one is definitely really good and could be high up there. It kinda reminds me of the Atavista that I constructed out of all the leaks actually that I detailed in the last Gambino thread (although the album I made is actually a lot more cohesive lmao) My ranking is BTI > Camp/EP > my version of Atavista > Royalty > Culdesac > Release 3.15/Atavista > STN MNTN/Kauai > Awaken > all the earlier stuff With Bando potentially falling third or fourth. He's literally my favorite rapper (now that Kanye is out of the picture) so I love all of this and nostalgia probably plays a heavy role in Camp's placement. I do love Awaken and respect what it did for his career but I really only regularly go back to Me and Your Mama and Redbone from it... and I also realize that including a huge double album that I created that's composed of like 70% leaks is cheating but who gives a shit
I'd swap Kauai with Camp and maybe have Culdesac higher but pretty much agree with that. Royalty is the one that has insane nostalgia for me tho
This album ends on such a high note. The Khruangbin song isn’t my thing, but Running Around, Dadvocate, and A Place Where Love Goes are all S tier
I do love the ending but I think if he had included Midlife on the album as the closer it would have been the PERFECT ending to Gambino
I really enjoy this, makes me feel the same kinda way I did when I first listened to BTI. This is a whole ass album and I’m here for it. I even like Talk My Shit, the pitched up vocals aren’t my style but somehow it still kinda works for me. Yoshinoya, No Excuses and A Place Where Love Goes are the standouts for me
Listening to this now. Kind of all over the place, but maybe the versatility is the point. A similar complaint to the last one, but I like this way more. The rappy songs are cool. I also liked the noisier / weirder moments on this record. Lyrically he’s not really saying anything but that’s okay. Some v interesting production decisions throughout. Best song so far is No Excuses.
