Is the voice the only reason people don't like California?

I can definitely understand that but I still really like the instrumental, it's almost Vampire Weekend-esque

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

The instrumental to California sounds straight off the Community soundtrack and I love it. but the vocals are... yeah, nah

I wonder if anyone will combine the instrumental with the vocals from Pharos, I'd chuck that in my tracklist in a heartbeat

Listened to this yesterday. Ive never been hugely into Childish Gambino and the group of artist that get lumped into this musical bracket but id honestly say this album is far more impressive than anything Kanye did on his last 2 albums.

Hats off to Donald for this.

It's not even remotely comparable to what Kanye did on his last two albums

I referenced Kanye because everyone talks about him being a musical genius. I think this record is far more creative and progressive than Kanye. Thats all i meant.

They're two different genres, funk and hip hop. Idk how you could listen to Yeezus and deny the "progressive" nature of it.

    How do you gauge creativity?

Yeezus is some next level shit, this is cool (mostly harmonically) but it's fairly derivative. TLOP is also more inventive even if it's a little strange

Yeezus is one of the most creative/progressive/inventive albums in years. I'm digging Awaken My Love too, but I don't think it touches Yeezus.

  13. As someone who loves Donald Glover/Because the Internet and had it on my EOTY list right alongside Yeezus, in no way does this come close to how inventive Yeezus (and even Pablo) is. This is far more derivative, which is fine, but it's literally hardly even comparable outside of him reinventing himself

  14. this does not help its case, also the cartoonish springy sound effects don't help at all

Master of not knowing what the hell I'm doing.

If anything I'd say this is probably closer to Kanye going from Graduation to 808s.

this is not like anything that kanye has done and I don't know why we're still talking about it

i mean i guess i could be one of those people who say yeezus is derivative of death grips....

jk industrial music and hip hop predates them and yeezus is greater than anything they've ever done.

I've already listened to this more times than I've listened to yeezus. I guess this is just more up my alley.

Bound 2 was the only thing worth it on that album imo.

He gets weird on this album doesn't he. Thought it was going to be more serious based on MAYM. Wasn't expecting it to sound as much like...Ween (at times)?

Its official, I'm in love with this album. Probably listened to it 15 times this weekend. Great to listen during the day when the suns out and the windows rolled down.

I think I really like it, but I'm constantly so mad with his weird vocal decisions. This would easily be a 10/10 album for me if he just sang with his natural voice. Sometimes it works, sometimes it absolutely ruins an otherwise great song.

I definitely feel this way about "California"... I'm not sure any other tracks are actually brought down to THAT extent for me by the vocal choices but some of them I do think would be better without them.
