This is intriguing, and I think I at least enjoy it more than I did Awaken, but it certainly isn't something I could see myself returning to often. It's been a fun listen while I do background busy work at my makeshift desk setup at home. Love the last song, though. I'll always have because the internet.
Human Sacrifice (played live and a snippet in a phone commercial): Atavista (at the beginning of this Algorhythm live video; worth watching the whole thing to see how much Algorhythm changed too): Saturday (this clip is from his short film Guava Island but he also played it on SNL and it sounded a bit different): Die With You (only a snippet from the beginning of Guava Island): Guava Island/Die With You. : donaldglover All Night (sent to all ticket holders for the tour): Childish Gambino - All Night And just for posterity since Feels Like Summer is two years old but made the album, here's Summertime Magic and This is America which came out around the same time Literally almost enough for a second album right there lol
genuinely more bummed about no full-length "Die With You" than I am about "Saturday" lol. that hook is so nice
That seems about right to me tbh. It's not his opus as some are touting it, and it's not even that memorable. Unless he's got more in store for us, this album came across as a collection of his recent material (some songs much better than others) rather than a cohesive project. Like I said earlier, screams "identity crisis" to me.
I don't know why anyone wouldn't wanna go back to Under The Sun, Vibrate or Time. I love those! Album would be stronger if he cut the opener, Why Go to the Party, and some of the unnecessary interludes between songs.
Songs are ok, but the interludes are way too cumbersome and the songs are too long. Doesn't serve much narrative purpose
I think on top of that, with this being such an anxiety-ridden time, a kind of dense, hook-less album is just not my jam right now. Not that I expect Glover to back to the "Camp" days, but something like is not what I'm looking for.
Counterpoint though, I’d say the Weeknd’s After Hours is pretty dark and dense but I keep going back to that one. Guess not having hooks is the biggest detractor here
There are definitely some good songs on this album, but it's not really consistent and there's a lot of uninspired fluff surrounding the good moments.
Only track I don’t care for on this is the last one. Everything else is hitting me just fine. Especially love the first 3 tracks & Feels Like Summer.
Despite no actual social media promo other than posting links, I did just get served a paid ad on Instagram from the childishgambino account, linking to the album. So the label or someone on his team is spending actual money to get this out there. It's a weird campaign, but definitely a campaign.
Guess my expectations weren’t as high as others because I’ve been really enjoying this the last few days. Definitely has more of a mixtape vibe what with the variety of sounds and overall presentation, but that doesn’t bother me. A few songs I could do without but that was also the case with AML
