Yeah at this point the teasing has been going on way too long, especially without a proper single dropped
He was on Kimmel tonight promoting Lion King and Jimmy asked him about Gambino coming to an end and Donald seemed really hesitant to answer, he said he'll probably keep doing shows and he really loves making music... so maybe he's rethinking things!!!
I just want a proper version of Saturday. I have live rips of the SNL performance and the Guava Island version, but I need the real deal.
Saw him last night, confirmed it would be one of the last Childish Gambino shows. Holy crap though, he was downright incredible. Whole show, from the performance, production, band and audience interaction was fantastic. One of the best shows I've been to. Dropped a new song midway through, sounded good.
Just crunched a few numbers and this may be the equation you're looking for to figure this out: (1) No. 1 song + (2) Top 10 albums + (multiple) Golden Globe wins + (multiple) Emmy wins + (multiple) Grammy wins + (multiple) Other prestigious awards + Time spent on a cult television show + Literally Lando Calrissian ___________________________________________ = Very much big amounts of popularity
Yea, he definitely reached star status a while ago so it hasn't really felt sudden. He's been pretty well known since Because The Internet in 2013. It's fair to say "This Is America" bumped him to superstardom though.
He had minor hits for a while, then Redbone blew up, then a few years later This is America took him to another level.
Your original question wasn't about quality though, it was "when did he get so big?" He's been big for years now.
Star Wars is about the biggest franchise in the world... Atlanta is extremely well regarded and has run for 3 seasons already, he's just a rising star that keeps rising
I get that a lot of his older stuff is corny, but I really think his progression as an artist has been cool to see. I feel like by the time Awaken My Love dropped he had won over a lot of doubters... you’re not a fan of that album I’m guessing?
You're implying that quality equals popularity. Regardless of the quality of some of his earlier work (I also don't really like his rap focused work either), it spawned some hit singles.
Yeah, I also think the fact that he’s been able to have genuinely huge success across multiple mediums has been a big part of it. There’s not many entertainers out there currently who can match him in terms of versatility.
