r/hiphopheads - [Potentially Misleading] Donald Glover allegedly stole "This Is America" from another artist
I read a bunch of comments first so maybe I was expecting something more, but I don't think its like some massive blatant rip off. They have similar rhythms and structures but the rhythm was always supposed to be very familiar and the structure could definitely be a coincidence without it being a stolen song.
And like, to be fair, talking about how fucking stupid the US is isn’t a market cornered by one person or group at the moment
I’d it wasn’t Donald Glover that did this and just some other guy with the exact song and video, people would be shitting on him for this.
I don’t quite understand your argument tbh? I’m not trying to make any mention of donny’s social status, I more mean there’s a lot of middle ground between ‘ripoff’ and ‘two separate ideas’ and I don’t have any knowledge whatsoever of the situation so to place it anywhere on the scale would be disingenuous, y’know?
There are some artists or celebrities who are “too cool” to call out or disagree with and he’s one of them. I think he’s cool as hell, but this is a shitty move and the least he could have done was credit him on the song in some way. But he didn’t.
Aside from those background vocals during the chorus I don’t feel like there’s anything the two songs share that are particularly unique to just them
I'm definitely down to call out Glover. I don't think this is some blatant rip off, its two trap songs that mention America.
If only one or two elements were similar, I wouldn’t think it’s a big deal. But come on, there are four or five distinct similarities between these two songs. Ignoring it doesn’t make that false.
