Fuck.. My work has been doing the whole "Well...let's all start coming back 3-4 days a week, it's all going away" Sigh...
I was able to snag a vaccine appointment at the UC via Zocdoc. But like a fool I made the same damn typo TWICE when I gave my email address so I didn't get the confirmation email necessary to get the vaccine. Ugh. Hopefully, I can get it sorted via the hotline number.
When my mom was dealing with 1b hell about a month ago she thought she had an appointment and went to one of the mass vax sites only to find it didn't register when she was submitting her info, however they made her another appointment on the spot for like two weeks later. While she ended up getting one sooner at a grocery store, it could be a good contingency plan to just go and see if you can at least get an appointment soonish.
The appointment isn't scheduled until March 25th. I have the Zocdoc confirmation, but my wife also made an appointment and there is supposed to a corresponding email sent by the UC directly that features a QR code to add to your wallet. I didn't get one of those and I realized it was because of the typo in the email address. I'm hoping the hotline will be able to help me and just send the QR code to the proper email. But being a state employee, I know better than to hope for a smooth experience with the bureaucracy.
Also, I'm glad to hear that your mom was able to get her vaccine. My dad is getting his second shot on Friday and I know I'll sleep so much better once he is fully vaccinated. I hope my mom is able to get hers soon.
Opening the UC to 1B+ was nice. Also read they broke their record of shots given in a weekend. Hopefully they can keep that momentum up.
I've been on hold with the hotline for 23 minutes and counting hoping to get that email issue resolved. EDIT: And we are up to 94 minutes on hold.
Officially from the mayor today Cubs and Sox will be allowed to have 20% capacity starting with opening day https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id...ook&utm_medium=news_tab&utm_content=algorithm
I mean other states have fans so….. and have for months. People gotta stop living in fear. Plus with the vaccine ramping up and Chicago/the state getting a shit ton of money for it. It was only a matter of time before stuff opened back up and allowed fans in.
I mean, Illinois and Chicago haven't been following other states at all during this pandemic. The city and the state aren't even on the same page. It's less "living in fear" than being skeptical of Lightfoot in general. You posted an article from last week where she said no fans on opening day. But we've made enough progress in six days for that direction to change? Inconsistent messaging is going to lead to rightful criticisms. I think everyone understands that things have to open up, but it's not like they're prioritizing hot dog vendors for vaccines right now. Baseball games for billionaires doesn't seem like a fair risk for the workers that have to deal with these consequences, but that's just me.
I mean I get people don’t like it but don’t go out then till you feel more comfortable or get the vaccine. There’s plenty of people that are sick of being stuck inside and want to go back to having a normal life and go to sporting events or concerts. But they have protocols set up to keep people safe. Which I hope works and cases keep going down. Not everyone is going to agree on how the city/state is handing things. Which is fair. This state sucks sometimes. apparently that article I posted last week didn’t have much weight behind it. I sent it to my dad too and he said it wasn’t true and that they still planned on allowing fans from my original post a couple days prior
When the state allows for superspreading events like indoor dining and bar service and sporting events to take place, particularly with more vaccine-resistant and transmissible variants like the UK and Brazilian strains, that puts everyone else who are following the proper public health guidance and only doing essential activities, like going grocery shopping or going to the pharmacy, at risk. Given that I don't simply have the option to just stay in my house until i'm vaccinated this summer (at best), it's extremely callous and enraging of all government officials deciding that the lives of the people that want to respect public health measures don't fucking matter.
I'm not going out, I'm fortunate enough to not have to. Others aren't that fortunate. Being tired of being stuck inside, which I am, isn't a good excuse to host something as non-essential as a baseball game. Just my opinion. The article most definitely has weight because she was quoted saying no fans on opening day. Great that your connection knew it was bullshit the whole time, but why should I be ok with my elected official lying to me then?
How are people still not comprehending how this virus spreads a year into this whole thing? Mass gatherings are bad. That means more people on public transit. More people out and about going to restaurants and bars. It means spreading the disease when not enough people have been vaccinated. It means people dying or becoming seriously ill.
1) Reopening early is forcing working class people to return to a dangerous position whether they want to or not due to economic considerations, very possibly before they’ve had a chance to get the vaccine. 2) Reopening early will also have a ripple effect that will not be compartmentalized between “people who want to be out” and “people who want to stay in.” Public transit usage will go up, more people are interacting with more people in public spaces and in private businesses, more people will take the germs home with them, etc etc. 3) Reopening early sends a mixed message. If bars, venues, and stadiums start opening, people get the message that it is fine to go to those places now. Then, weird respectability politics emerge as elected ghouls like Lightfoot say it is your fault for going to a place that she reopened when numbers go up. It’s a way of passing the moral burden onto the individual rather than acknowledging that this is an issue impacting the whole. We live in a society (lol), our actions impact each other. 4) Still very possible that the only reason numbers are way down is because the past 2 months were too cold for people to congregate anywhere, and that another spike is coming before a critical mass of people can get vaccinated. That should obviously be something we work to avoid.
