Right? I feel like it's gotten so much worse the last few years. It drives me nuts because I have a golden retriever, like the most lazy slug, friendly dog ever haha
I have a golden retriever too and he is the most energetic goof ball who loves everyone but yeah one of our places only let us rent because they loved goldens otherwise over 40 lbs wouldn't be allowed. We own now so it's a non-issue, but yeah really is quite the pain.
Does anyone have any tips for job searching in Chicago / Chicagoland area? Any sites that are good to use? I graduated from UW last May and currently work at a startup company in Madison, WI. I'll be moving back to the Chicagoland area in May or so once my partner finishes her degree at UW. I figure there's no time like the present to start exploring opportunities for the future.
I'd put a resume up on some of the job sites like CareerBuilder to start some dialog. Also, you could start building relationships with some head hunters from the search firms. They usually take time to find opportunities so if they know someone is looking they are more likely to notify them directly when they have something. Beyond those things, it probably just comes down to family and friend connections or applying for something directly when you are ready to find something.
Any tips I can provide about job searching are probably not specific to searches in the Chicago/Chicagoland area. If anything, being in Chicago might bolster a normal job search because of the breadth of companies there are in the area.
When I was looking to move here (from St. Louis) in 2010 I added my brothers address (he'd already lived in Chicago) to my resume as my own and I saw an extremely higher response rate. I don't know if the thought or relocating me scared them off or what but it definitely helped.
Yep, this is always a good move if you are looking to relocate. This works for a few reasons. It optimizes your resume in searches. And probably more importantly, it reduces potential relocation costs for either an employer or search firm. Depending on how desperate you are to move your narrative can go a few ways.
That's a great idea. I'll make sure to put down my parent's address on my resume. I hadn't thought of that at all.
However you want to present it to folks, I would just make sure to address that elephant right away. If you sort of brush it off or don't really explain what's going on, then you won't be considered as a serious candidate. Your narrative should be easy. Your partner is finishing school and you want to head back to Chicago to be closer to family. To make the transition smooth, you've arranged for temporary living with your folks. That really won't be a problem. The only potential issue is the fact you aren't in the city, so interviewing schedules might get tough. To combat that, you could say that you are already moved back and waiting for your partner to finish her schooling. Again, it just depends how you want to play it and how motivated you are to get things rolling.
Definitely, that's great advice. I feel like the story wouldn't be too hard to sell, especially when it'll be pretty close to the truth as it is. So many people take the train (or drive) from my hometown to Chicago every day for work.
Yeah, the story will work and be accurate. And it relieves any concern from the other party. I was just saying depending on the position and when they are looking to interview relative to you being away still, that could potentially make it difficult. So if there was a role you applied for and really liked what you heard in a phone interview or description, it may be wise to just say you are already moved back to avoid a potential timing issue. Unless you have total freedom where you are to make a trip down to Chicago at the drop of a hat (some people working may not have that flexibility) I was just throwing it out there.
For sure, I'm glad you mentioned it! Thankfully, my current job allows me to work remotely whenever, so I could pull of a quick trip to Chicago with relative ease.
Anyone going to any of the Tomorrow Never Knows Festival shows? Just picked up back to back tix for IIOI playing Proper and Title Fight. Very, very excited.
