I want this band to be huge, so please listen to them. They’re on a completely different level with this release— genre-bending and fusing, even introducing rapping on various tracks, all while maintaining their own sense of identity that they’ve established since Making a Planet. Idek how to do a RIYL for this band, but Sam constantly gets compared to Brendon Urie, and they’re clearly just as influenced by 90s boy bands, R&B, hip-hop, and jazz as they are “emo” bands, math rock, and bands like Incubus and 311.
This is so weird and interesting. It feels like something that bridges the gap between the modern emo scene (mostly in the guitars) and the brand of pop rock Hopeless and Fearless were selling in the late 00s (Mayday Parade, Every Avenue, Artist vs Poet, etc.) [mostly in the vocal melodies]. But then there's just straight weirdness thrown in their with the heavy moments and the hip hop. Idk!! It's really cool though and something I could see myself getting into more.
The more you listen, the more it makes sense. This is probably my AOTY as of right now. They fucking killed it on the (self-)production too.
This band is awesome. Caught them in Chicago early in the year with Beach Bunny and Mineral Girls (RIP, shoutout Audrey) and have been following them closely since. This is an insanely diverse and cool set of songs also Flex/Reflex is a blast to sing in the car
Everyone who hasn’t should go back and also listen to Downhill bc that record still rules. Instat still might very well be my favorite song by them, tho Fashion Valley is putting up a fight. I keep noticing little things about this with each listen. The little “bops” Sam does in the second chorus of Luxury are so subtle but brilliant.
Shared these replies with Sam bc 3EB is his favorite band and he said “gala is our rendition of burning man and its gonna be me by NSYNC*” Definitely, and honestly, on paper it really shouldn’t work. It’s insane to me how many risks they took with this release and managed to pull off.
I just did this and yupp, this is also good. Also I just saw on fb that they’re coming here this weekend so yaaaaaay going to be a fun weekend.
Awesome!!! If you get a chance to talk to them, tell them Audrey says hi. Also, make sure to listen to the singles “Spiral” and “Shine Sprite” too!! Spiral was between their debut and Downhill and Shine Sprite was almost on CheemTV but ended up cut for whatever reason.
Gala is def one of the best here, I’d take Fashion Valley and Luxury over it but it’s probably next after that. Another cool little detail I noticed on one of my last couple listens is that you can hear the sounds of phones ringing layered into the background of “Cheem Type Beat”, up until the “it’s kinda weird to think I’m still using your phone” line.
This is somehow simultaneously the coolest and least cool thing I've ever heard Pretty iffy on the rapping but had to stop myself from dancing on the sidewalk a couple times and immediately wanna listen again so I think I love it? It reminds me of Crying in how far out yet hooky it is
