It’s a very bad ass move to both become a better band and shed shitty fans from the fan base like that commenter in one fell swoop. Imagine 100 copies of that dude in the crowd at a show judging what other people are wearing, how they’re expressing their excitement over the songs, and just being general insecure a-holes. I have to imagine shows are more fun and safer spaces for a wider variety of people the further they get from their one cool 90s guitar revival album.
How...have they falling off? They put out a record that seems to be well received (mostly) by their fanbase and their tour is doing well.
i meant to imply that it was in fact I who thought they had fell off, not society at large, but “fallen off” was bad verbage
I love all three, but Young Enough is my favorite. Westermarck and Black Hole will forever be in my CB top 5 though
Young Enough is probably my least fav of the three, but I feel fine saying that knowing the band had a very hard time with that release and the pressure surrounding it. They seem so much happier now and that rocks.
talk about a variety of opinions of this fan base.... i mean, if anything it shows their versatility and creativity. Yes, I am 100% in the young enough camp and also dont really care for guppy and find album 3 to be "solid". 1) Young Enough 2) Forever 3) Guppy
All three are great. They’re good at crunchy alt-rock and the slick pop stuff. I was very not jazzed about the pop move at first. I didn’t like the loose singles, didn’t think the new stuff translated as well as the old when I saw them live last year and worried that they waited too long. Also, there’s a curse for artists that name their album “Forever.” This rules, top to bottom. It’s a kind of shift that you don’t see many rock bands make any more, let alone as successfully as this. I can understand “Guppy” fans not liking it and wanting the old sound, but they clearly are in a different place and are content with it.
The loose singles, IMO, were below what they’re capable of. Not because of genre but because they just weren’t as creative and interesting and fun as they’ve proven they can be. When people talk about a band going pop and slipping, that’s what comes to my mind: trying a new genre but not really doing that genre as well as you can do your previous genre.
I Need a New Boyfriend is not good but I think You Don’t Even Know Me Anymore is great and on par with this (extremely good) album!
