One Saturday evening this February: Charli is at another studio, in west London, to reveal her new music. I first see her through the glass, trademark sunglasses on at 8pm, presiding over the sound desk in a Saint Laurent leather jacket: iconography casually assured. I take a seat and she walks to the speakers to plug in her phone, wearing skinny vintage black waxed trousers and Louboutin heels. “We knew we wanted to go to Paris to do it,” she says, compulsively playing with her shades. “We knew it would be this very hectic, rich time and we like creating in that kind of atmosphere.” She crouches down, presses play and turns away. Heavily processed guitars strafe the room, then fracture along with Charli’s voice: “I think the dance floor is dead,” she drawls, “so now we’re making rock music.” Clearly we have come to bury Brat. “It’s Fun To Flip The Form”: Charli XCX Lets Vogue In On Her Rock Reinvention | British Vogue
I feel like with Charli you can never fully take these statements at face value, she loves playing with expectations. The “dance floor is dead” line sounds more like a concept or mood than a literal genre switch. Even if she leans into guitars, it’ll probably still have that hyperpop/electronic DNA underneath. That said, I’m actually curious about a rock-leaning direction from her. She’s always been good at blending sounds in weird ways, so it could end up being something pretty unique rather than a straight genre pivot. Also yeah, wouldn’t be surprised if she’s trolling a bit and the final product is totally different from what people expect.
Didn't even see this thread was a thing yet, gonna repost my reaction from the other thread lol Feels like that might be the only song for awhile then, can't imagine the album is near coming out But new Charli music is new Charli music so woo!
Definitely think it should have been like a minute longer to really pop but still cool, there's absolutely sauce there
Haha I like this and very into the sound, curious where all of this goes. But yea obviously feels like a small piece to a larger puzzle.
