from what I gather, this is the album she's been hinting at being her big pop album, so we'll see!!

Pop 2 is one of my favorites of all time and I thought I'd be saddened for her to veer away from PC music but this song is perfect and now I also want an album full of this.

Even if she makes an entire album like this, I don't think that in ANY WAY means she is leaving her POP 2/Charli/hifn sound behind in any way.

I feel like pop stars get much less "freedom" to try things out than like... rock bands. Or maybe it's a perceived male vs female thing too.

My point is that ANY rock band singer can release side projects, acoustic albums, start new bands, and experiment in a ton of different ways and it's always accepted, but if Charli wants to do a full on pop album right now, that should be totally accepted too right?

I'm kinda just word vomiting, but I think my main point is that even if this is bubblegum pop, and even if it's terrible, I don't see her as an artist that is changing to this style only, I expect weird shit for the entirety of her career

Oh no I 100% agree with this and didn't mean to suggest that I'd wish she'd just stay in one lane or anything! I'm on board with just about every variation of Charli.

I wish more pop artists felt free to try out different styles like she is. I think Halsey is proving that it's possible as well, but I can't think of a TON of pop stars who have made big experiments lately

it starts out very reminiscent of "break the rules," which is a fucking classic huge pop charli tune

i was thinking about this the other day taking haley's new album into consideration against the rest of her discog. you never really anticipate much of an evolution from pop artists...its usually very typical what directions they go as they either usher in a popular trend or reflect the current popular trend.

    I would agree

of course there has been some exceptions e.g. Bjork & Kate - maybe Joni if you count her as a pop artist

Carly did the switch but has stayed on the same path post-switch

    Charli mixes it up

    Halsey is a good call

    any other examples?

examples like bjork dont count lol she's more of an experimental artist than a pop artist. a lot of examples fall more in line with indie pop stars who got bigger more organically than someone like, lady gaga who came out the gates with one of the biggest pop albums in the world for her debut. but im not saying pop artists dont switch it up. lady gaga certainly has. its just always been a switch up that followed the pattern current trends in music were following anyway. big stage EDM had a moment so she made born this way and art pop. then indie folk had a moment then she made joanne. then went back to big dance pop for chromatica. you see what i mean?

an example of someone who has switched it up but never in any real boundary pushing way. her debut was a sound of the times, the follow up was a refined, better version of it, and her new album is a new sound thats been done to death in the pop sphere over the past 20 years. different for her, but not different.

yup - I agree with everything except Björk not being a pop artist bit

I think she has maintained that pop aspect / element throughout her career

so you talking about evolution of pop in general?

yeah i dont agree, its pretty clear in what ways bjork is different than other women you would call pop artist, especially in her late career. you're not hearing any of her work with arca on the radio.

in which case my point stands re: Björk - if anything she has pushed the boundaries of what pop music can be dozens of times

shes in a league of her own to me, no one else sounds like her or really even tries to. which is incredible, but shes not following trends and trends arent following her.

i only tried listening to one of her albums once and hated it, but definitely not at all what im thinking about in terms of pop artists. i mean like rihanna, gaga, britney, lorde, miley, adele, halsey
