I think a part of why I like Charli much less than the rest of her albums is what they did to Track 10, Blame It on Your Love is worse in almost every conceivable way. And in a vacuum it's still a fine song but against knowing Track 10 already....man
I think Charli nails the POP2 wild stuff with Shake It and Click, absolutely CRUSHES the ballads with White Mercedes-Silver Cross-I Don't Wanna Know-Official, like holy shit that section rules. Next Level Chari is insane. Gone, Cross You Out, Warm, February 2017 and 2099 are perfect collabs that showcase both artists without losing quality. 1999 and Blame it on Your Love are the two low points, but that's 2 out of 15 tracks. The album really showcases every aspect of her aristry and nails it on all sides
Since when is 1999 a low point??? I'm not even the one trying to defend the album but that song's great lol
“Blame It On Your Love” isn’t bad. People are too weird about it because it’s doing a different thing than “Track 10.” I don’t care about Lizzo, but it’s otherwise a decent, fun pop song. Interesting straightforward version of the more experimental other track.
I think Blame It On Your Love sucks and is made even worse by having Track 10 as a comparison. I deleted it from my iTunes though so I literally forget it exists and it's not part of the album in my mind.
S/T is all over the place and not in a good way, and overstuffed. Songs like White Mercedes, Blame It On Your Love and 1999 don't mesh well with the more Pop 2 sounding cuts at times and feel like she was pressured by Atlantic to include them. Shake It runs on way too long and was much more fun live than on record. A good chunk of the rest is just there, feeling like N1A or Pop 2 leftovers to my ears. At times it feels close to diminishing returns with her core sound. It still contains some highlights (Cross You Out, Official, Gone, Silver Cross, February 2017 and I Don't Wanna Know) but not gonna lie, I've barely revisited it in full since How I'm Feeling Now came out. It's at the bottom of her discography for me now.
It's bad because it sounds like the most generic tropical pop stuff this side of 2016, except it came out in late 2019 so felt super dated on arrival, has a wack Lizzo verse on top and follows its superior remix Track 10. It had no chance in that sense. I wish it remained in the vaults lol. It certainly sounded more at home on the scrapped third album. One of her worst songs with After The Afterparty and Die Tonight tbh.
Pop 2, HIFN and Brat are all essential albums. The rest have a scattered amount of songs I like. But I’ll always ride for Charli.
Yup I do like that one too! Pretty sure I've heard a synthpop demo of Blame It On Your Love during one of the mass leaks as well. Guess they just dropped the ball with both songs at the end of the day
I was so scared when Blame It On Your Love dropped that it would blow up and replace Track 10 in her set lol
