I thought that No Malice album was solid. Lecrae has put out some great songs. But still, it weirds me out, haha.
Jesus Freak was honestly huge for me when I was like 10, probably one of the first steps in me forming my own musical identity. I bet I'd still know most of the words if I heard it now.
The extreme hate is definitely unwarranted but I do unfortunately think this is pretty easily his weakest project. Not because of the subject matter, it just doesn't feel as inspired as any of his mixtapes, like he's on autopilot for a ton of this I do still plan on going to the tour and showing support for one of my favorite rappers though
Also seeing the real picture is super unsettling after looking at the cover for so many years His pupils lmao
Gave this yet another go last night based on some of the praise it's received in here, and it's still not clicking. I officially give up with this album, easily his worst project. There isn't a single great song on this thing imo.
Fair enough. Even if they hate all other songs, I don't understand how someone thinks I Got You isn't great though, haha.
Ari Lennox is awesome, Shea Butter Baby is one of the best albums of the year. I guess I'm just not much of a fan of anything Chance does on that song
Question: do you not notice the references (the way he flows the first five bars for example) or do they just not appeal to you you? I'm not trying to go at you by the way, I'm just curious.
If I'm honest, I haven't really digested the lyrics all that much. I normally only start to dive into the lyrical content of albums once I've run through them several times. I think his flows on this album sound decent enough, but none of his raps have really hooked me in like some of his previous material.
I Got You specifically is referential more in the way the song sounds, the way he raps sometimes etc. (though some lines sound familiar). Earlier I called it an amalgamation of classic rap and R&B songs people have player at their weddings during the last 30 years. I personally enjoy that.
great songs: all day long, do you remember, eternal, hot shower, i got you, title track, big fish, ballin flossin, 5 year plan, get! a! bag!, zanies and fools
