Also tbh I’m not really interested in the criticism of a wedding party themed hip hop record by people more likely to play some white-ass indie pop at their wedding rather than like En Vogue (who of course are on the album) or whatever but EDIT: Not anyone here necessarily/specifically, really more of an overall thing
It’s feels like such a loving amalgamation of rap and r&b songs that have been played at weddings for the last 30 years
acid rap and coloring book are more hyper-compressed bursts of sound and color, a lot of ideas being thrown around at once. this record has a lot of ideas but lingers on them and executes them in a largely more quiet and relaxed way
i think everyone in here is valid in their reasons to not like it and i have no issues with it. I do however think the "overall" reaction to this (be it twitter and most music sites) is atrocious (again, havent seen alot of this in this thread) as it all comes off as "happy black man singing about loving his family == corny". it all comes off as gatekeeping on subject matters on what rappers can write about.
i think this is just a super fun swimming in 7's type album. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but its super enjoyable and type of thing you could throw on in background of a BBQ and everyone would enjoy it.
I'm gonna give this a listen to during the week but I got up to Roo and it's okay so far. First 3 songs but then uhhhhhhhhhhh, ya know. Hot Shower exists haha, DaBaby's verse was great though.
I think you've nailed why I feel let down by this album. Those "hyper-compressed bursts of sound" were what made Chance stand out from other rappers, and what made him such a memorable artist. For me, it's like this album has been stripped of that energy, and what I once loved about Chance is gone.
It's not as awful as some say, but this just doesn't hit like Coloring Book did for me in summer 2016. There are also some of the cheesiest lyrics ever on this thing haha
I would've thought this was a sure thing for #1 on the charts, but it looks like it's a tight race with NF's new album. Current projections are: Chance - 110-125k NF - 95-105k Gonna be honest, I have no clue who NF is lol
i think it makes him a way more interesting and diverse artist, i did not know he was capable of this kind of dj quik-ish party record (that has a way vaster emotional core than i'm implying by calling it a "party record") full of rich musical allusions
it's a great expansive rap record, a lot of different ideas emanating from a single joyous mood. i love pretty much every song now lol
I’ve been a fan of plenty of vocally Christian rappers in my life but somehow when rappers are referred to as Christian rappers it makes my skin crawl
I grew up with a Christian upbringing and listened to a fair amount of "christian bands," and I gotta say, your mindset is totally warranted haha. There is a HUGE difference between "Christian rapper" and "rapper who is Christian"
I know right, even if a rapper who is Christian raps about his religion/faith it’s still not the same as a Christian Rapper lol
I do wonder how many of them are kind of shoehorned into it and then roll with it, or at least not actively resist it, because it works for them in terms of sales. Like, I listened to Theory Hazit in the 00s and I had no idea he was a “Christian rapper” until I looked up his Wikipedia a few years ago.
