I just listened to acid rap, coloring book and the big day on a drive to LA. I gotta say I was bored of the new album like 10 songs in and by the end I was like ughhh let’s get it over Sorry chance I suck :(
like I said, on one hand I don't mind when rappers game the system, but also you are not overthinking it, you are right and the reason it happens is thinly veiled racism
Hoping he makes an appearance at Lolla this weekend... I think him coming out during Death Cab or Childish is pretty likely
My cousins wedding is the night of Chance in Chicago, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t add another night at United.
He's supposedly playing a free show in September at Grant Park for the Bears vs Packers NFL kickoff game.
Chance the Rapper to play concert affiliated with Bears’ opener, according to chairman George McCaskey
I do not want to be attacked on here so I will not be answering this question lol I would have to revisit though. I love the other two albums. It's just too long for me to return to often
I generally don’t agree with Breihan but I think he kinda nails it here. Premature Evaluation: Chance The Rapper 'The Big Day' I think this is the most vital point: “Even the left turns — the one house track, the one juke track — are the same left turns that Chance has been making for his entire career.”
“If you’re going to look at reviews like this one as evidence of a cynical backlash — as a reaction against the hosannas that greeted Coloring Book — then you can find plenty of ammunition. Maybe the songs on The Big Day will stick around and reveal themselves over time. But all I can tell you is how I feel.” This one sums up how i feel re: the “y’all hate fun” people in this thread
I really wanted to like this and was very excited when it seemed quite good on first listen, but each subsequent return has felt like more and more of a chore. On top of that, I would attribute almost everything I do like to the collaborators (especially DaBaby and uhhhh Shawn Mendes). I'm not quite ready to give up on it yet, but I'm already pretty confident that I'll have moved on in like a week.
Damn yeah that Stereogum review is kinda where I am with this. Every song on Coloring Book felt like an event in it's own right, but outside of a couple of tracks there's nothing here that really sounds interesting or memorable. I really wanted to like this.
This thread is brutal. I've never been the absolute biggest fan of Chance. I really like Acid Rap but I'm still ambivalent on Coloring Book. There's a lot of great stuff on this. A lot of stuff that is weird but might click and some stuff I just don't like. My preferences is when Chance goes for it but that Ben Gibbard hook is actually pretty brilliant. I agree with the comments in here about length but I feel like the length comparisons are in line with how I felt about Views because that did drag and its partly due to flow and not just overall length. I think there's a really lean 12 song album in here.
