Humming b/w MAXior; Loss on a Mountain Top, Change in a Parking Lot

Hello again friend,

Two new songs for you. One is about losing something on a mountain top, the other is about changing something in a parking lot. Two very different things, from two very different times in my life.

And because we are penpals, you get to hear them first, before their official release on 26/06.

On Humming:

Tom Bromley heard Humming for the first time and sent me a message: “It should be a single!”.

“Hahaha” I wrote back, my emotionless face aglow from the light of my phone’s screen. Surely he was joking.

It can’t be a single, I thought to myself. Humming is a sad song. A song about sad things. About loss and about blaming yourself. Hating yourself, even. It’s too much. Weak when it mattered. Faux-strong when it didn’t. How can you still love me? Humming a harmony, something for me.

“Nah, fuck that,” I said out loud, “Humming’s not a single.”

On MAXi:

“I don’t know—sometimes I love you, and sometimes… I… I don’t."

“Well I can’t be with someone who thinks like that” she said.

I hung up the phone and stared at the steering wheel. Parking lot was quiet.

I felt very alone, and very free.

Change is hard. Phone calls are harder. But sometimes you just need to make the call.

Sadness and optimism in two-and-a-half-minutes. I love this song.

Hi Bec,

Yep. That was THREE YEARS ago. Crazy, huh? Want/Need was a labour of love. I wrote it pretty quickly if I remember correctly. Sent it to Bromley. Sent it to Stu Harvey. Sent it to JT. Sent it to the band. Saying something hyperbolic like “I just wrote the best Ceres song ever!!”. (You are now the judge on that one, Bec). Then… not much. It was a demo. Then a half-recorded song. Then finished. Mixed. Mastered. Then thrown out. Then recorded a choir. Then mixed. Then mixed again. Mastered again. Sat on. And finally, yours, Bec. Ridiculous that it took that long, really, isn’t it?

Does this mean there’s more where this one came from? Yes! Songs called Humming and MAXi. See above. You must’ve manifested them into existence, thank you for that.

And dare we hope for… an album? Who dares wins, Bec; who dares wins.

Hey Buzz,

I’ve never felt in control of writing music. Not entirely sure what my process is. But I do know I get into creative blocks—big ones. Mostly between records—they can last for a few weeks, a month—years even, just like you. Example: I didn’t write anything for a year-and-a-bit between Stretch Ur Skin and We Are a Team.

But I also (maybe) know that blocks are (probably) there for a reason. Don’t say something if you don’t have something to say. I believe in that, in a creative sense anyway. Maybe you just don’t have anything to say right now.

So I guess I would say: you got to go through it to get through it. Say it when you mean it.
