On the subject of albums to check out in the realm, adding the Pom Poko record Cheater from January to the list and the Anna B Savage record A Common Turn from January as well.

That Ian Sweet record has some good tunes on it. Thanks for recommending it. Had no idea.

"Hard Drive" is still song of the year for me. A full-on meditation class in five and half minutes, the rightful heir to Destroyer's Kaputt.

he’ll live forever in the sound of broken glass

Sounds a lot like ‘Kaputt’ on certain songs, or the solo Craig Finn records that Josh Koffman produced. She’s a good songwriter, very conversational lyrics. At least a song or two deal with the aftermath of David Berman’s death, so it’s pretty emotional. Great nighttime album.

I listened to the Purple Mountains record and — with utmost respect to the man as a lyricist — it didn’t grab me. Will be listening to American Water next

I’ve never been the type to fawn over just great lyrics, def need captivating song structures/instrumentation as well. For that reason Silver Jews has always grabbed me more than the PM record ever did

To me, his best records are Purple Mountains and American Water. “In 1984 / i was hospitalized for approaching perfection” might be my favorite opening lyric to an indie rock record ever. Starlight Walker is great and all his 00s albums are solid but you probably need to have bought into his style to get into them.

I just heard Hard Drive for the first time on my discover playlist and it absolutely kicked my ass emotionally. Did not see that coming haha. Checking out the full album now. Mindblowingly good stuff.

“American Spirits” absolutely should have been on the album. Lovely complement to one of my favorite records of the year.
