Lol at Pitchhfork giving him an 8.6 for being “self-referential”. If that’s the case, The 1975’s next album should get a 12.3
most old time car seat fans will probably hate this also I feel weird about this getting BNM and not BNR
Re: bnm, this is very very good, I probably like it as much as the original on initial listen and it'll probably depend on what kind of production I wanna hear. But it's not exactly like, reinventing the wheel for indie rock? It's solid songwriting but I wouldn't call it boundary pushing generally or a huge artistic leap for them specifically. So it's kind of a head scratcher to me
Idk, it makes sense to me. I haven't heard the record yet, but they obviously really like his music. BNM doesn't necessarily designate something boundary pushing. It's a weird choice when you look at the stuff they overlooked for BNM this year (Porches, JPEGMAFIA, Jeff Rosenstock), but I'm not really surprised or bothered by the choice.
Yeah, I'm not surprised at all, and I know it's a p arbitrary designation but it definitely underscores that for me if that makes sense
do you really think that was the only thing that went into the score? they talked about enjoying that aspect of his music
i mean this was an incredibly predictable BNM it's mostly that this should have been considered a reissue instead but ah well
You’re wrong. It’s not a reissue, it’s a re-recording. If it was explicitly packaged with the original, maybe. But the designation fits.
not sure I agree with that, bit of a gray area but it's not like it's just a remaster. if the entire thing was re-recorded and changes were made, I'd say it's a new album haven't heard the old one tho so don't know how subtle the differences are
yeah i guess, it's a weird weird case. i'm not like offended by it or anything, haha. it's a very interesting release idea, and i'm wondering when we get a new record by him or if this is it for two/three years
Definitely curious if this is it for a while. It’s being heavily marketed as his new album. It’s fine by me, since I’ve not spent time with the original, but definitely interested to see. Would be cool to get another album this year though. Idk how much time he spent on this.
I couldn't make it through this This dude should not be writing songs over 6 minutes imo I guess I get why so many people are enamored by Toledo, but his songwriting is really just okay to me I wish his vocals weren't that lackadaisical Julian Casablancas affectation too, it just takes the life out of the songs I wish I liked this more, the concept of the album is interesting, but sadly just did not do it for me
that's totally fair, and I get why people are into this for me I guess the arrangements and vocal performances don't bring anything that excite me enough to get through a 8+ minute runtime on a track I admire the ambition of what they're trying to do, it just doesn't really work for me at all I had the same kind of thing with Teens of Denial but I guess this group just isn't really for me
yes! I like a good handful of their songs, have just never been head over heels for a complete project yet
Yeah, I do think that's the main reason it got such a high score. I just read the review again; though of course the music resonates with the writer, justifying his own obsession with CSH is the focus of the piece. It comes off like he's loved this album for a long time (look at the way he glosses over any negatives with an emdash parenthetical in the last sentence) and is trying to justify pushing it as literally Pitchfork's best album of the year thus far. To be clear: I couldn't care less what score Will gets... he's super talented I think it's great that someone's trying to get more people to listen to him. I loved the last CSH release and I haven't heard this one yet. But as a writer myself, it's kind of a weird conceit to hang laurels on when pop music itself has become ridiculously meta in the last decade. I'd rather he try to sell the album on its own merits.
This is fine, but entirely too long. Last album was too, but I feel it had more hooks to latch onto. There’s a bunch of songs I like, but honestly not sure how much I’ll return to this. Especially with many other great albums out today and in the coming weeks.
they closed with bodys when i saw him play a real venue for the first time, so it's cool to see a fully fleshed out version of it
