ROCK AND ROLL WILL NEVER DIE

EVERY RECORD SHOULD SOUND LIKE THE 90S

Is Indie Rock Over The White Male Voice?

this was two months before the car seat record came out
horrible article obviously but a lot of the counterpoints to that article were looking at how "emo" is the new indie rock but that's not what the classic publications really want due to the stigma still behind the name

or i shouldn't have responded to this and just know how much you love "proving me wrong" and there was never going to be a productive discussion about this anyways

i read that article, i was the one who posted it on here originally.

indie bands being "emo" has literally nothing to do with my post, which was that parquet courts is very clearly a rip of the 90s indie bands so your thing about the publications inexplicably thirsting for a male fronted throwback to that era bc they dont have already have one is completely wrong, without even digging into how absurd it is that they specifically want a "male" fronted band doing those things, seemingly only introduced as a qualifier to remove someone like courtney barnett from the discussion.

whatever dude. i hear you have a friend on this record right??

i heard far less talk about the parquet courts record than this one, in fact i really haven't heard very much parquet courts hype (other than just normal acclaim, low 8's BNMs and then generally forgotten about after) since stoned and starving came out. band seems to be chugging along and doing fine but never really caught the buzz car seat did (post like when sunbathing animal just came out).

may also help that car seat seems to pull in the younger/"tumblr" crowd a lot more than parquet ever did so the general internet buzz is higher, but i mean, idk. this was a year that had very little buzzy highly acclaimed stereotypical sounding male indie rock records compared to usual.

they are both performing on like, colbert. they are roughly equivalent in popularity. low 8 bnms? their first bnm was higher than this record and their most recent was .1 points lower. they have a single with bun b! neither of these bands are like fucking festival headliners so i dont even know how to argue your purely anecdotal evidence about "buzz." regardless, the music press - which is what this conversation is about - absolutely already had a 90s-indebted indie rock band fronted by a dude to hype. they even hyped them this year alongside this record.

this started because you made a demonstrably untrue claim about what the music press wanted but didnt have and that this bands success was seemingly preordained because of that missing piece. if anything, you were kind of slighting what this record did, because you make it sound like it wasnt earned but handed to it because they were so desperate for something in this vein. also, who gives a shit about "stereotypical" indie records. i can think of nothing that is less interesting to me, as someone who tries to think critically about music, than a record i would describe as "stereotypical"

Parquet Courts is not a "big" band in status or in sound

Silly argument tho really don't know what Casey said that was so divisive

i didnt say they were "big"

You quoted Casey when he said people flock to this because it's "big classic sounding indie rock" and then mentioned Parquet Courts as an example of one that is already recognized but now I think you were referring to other parts of his post

i was referring specifically to the idea that the critical world specifically was "missing" a band like this, as though it filled a void for music critics

both bands are pretty heavily indebted to the 90s indie rock shit

Started this for the first time yesterday having never listened to a song by this band, or having heard anything about them. I love it. Also it was interesting watching this thread go from "praise!!" to "meh overrated".

i sort of blame myself for that here, haha
though i've noticed a lot of recent backlash, then backlash to the backlash, so maybe we're coming back around again, hah
