I'm going to be honest - I was more disappointed in this album than I was satisfied with it. However, that doesn't mean I dislike the album. And I think if the production was a bit better, I'd like it even more. But the main issues I had with it was the fact that more than a couple songs we had already heard recorded/mastered versions before on Bobby's solo stuff. I was also bummed to not hear Kara on this one at all (unless I just missed her?). Aside from production, I think the majority of the tracks were just not interesting. If you've caught them live, you can tell a night/day difference in emotion and intensity when playing songs of TFIC and TKNM. To be quite honest, they look bored playing some of the new tracks. Lastly, how I connected to TFIC the most was lyrically - it was the best writing I've read in certainly the past 5 years. This fell flat with only a few stand outs. That being said, I'd still probably place it in my top 5 of the year, even after being so critical of it. The strongest track for me by far is Trying Year which I absolutely loved and probably led me into this album with preconceived notions on what it would deliver. Behind that, The King of No Man is my favorite.
I didn't realize the King of no man was also from Bobby's album. I think I prefer Bobby's lyrics more.
Really enjoy this after a few listens but wish the production wasn't so flat. This album would be huge if it had production similar to the new Sorority Noise album.
i too enjoy it more than the future is cancelled but i generally need some emo textures to carry me through a pop-punk record which this has in spades
i still love this and i may have rated it a liiiiiittle too high at a 4.5 i still think its among the best of the year so far
I think you nailed it. I enjoy these songs but they just have no "oomph" to them and they fall flat. When songs kick in it just doesn't sound "right." I'll give it more and more spins and hopefully will like it as much as I want to like it.
A couple more listens in. Has some really great moments interspersed throughout, but it overall isn't grabbing me like TFIC did. Which is of course fine, because that album is truly next level.
^My thoughts exactly after a few more listens. It's a solid record that will definitely be in my top 20 for the year, but it's a tier below TFIC which is in my top 10 favorite albums of all time.
Was gonna drive to Columbus (2 hours) to see them but just found out the show starts at 9 and is a 4 band bill
i like this a lot on first listen also, what are some other emo/indie/punk records that sound like this that have come out between last july and now?
Guess I just don't dig this band, tbh. It was always kind of a head scratcher for me why TFIC was so popular - it was okay but didn't do a lot for me - and I definitely like this record less than that one.
The Key Studio Sessions: Captain, We're Sinking - The Key Didn't see this posted in here, but they did 4 songs live in studio: Crow (Little Wounds) Cannonless Hunting Trip Books There are videos of "Cannonless" and "Hunting Trip" and all 4 are up on Soundcloud.
Saw them roll through last night and they put on a great, albeit fairly short, set. Show didn't finish until 12:45 though so I didn't really mind. Anina Trying Year Water Montreal (featuring vocalist of Turnspit) *A Leo Song off KONM* *A Leo or Bobby Somg off KONM* Lake Here's To Forever Crow (Little Wounds) Beer Can Brother
The first Leo song was Cannonless. I agree tho - my only complaint was the set felt short, but I didn't mind it seeing as I had to work this morning. Bobby kept commenting about how diehard some people were for being at a late weeknight show which was appreciated on my end.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but attended their show in Brooklyn on Saturday night. A few times throughout the show they said it would likely be their last. Major bummer as they've been a favorite for a while.
Bobby also has tweeted about having his next solo album being almost ready, so I guess that's taking some more priority, but I also believe they all have jobs outside of music and such too.
