C & Ped my thoughts from the other CWS thread: "Upon first listen, The Future is Cancelled is a much better album. The emo/post-hardcore/Brand New influence that some tracks have on this album is cool, but it just doesn't have that perfect blend of deprecating lyrics and barn-burning instrumentation that I grew to love from these guys. With that being said, I remember being disappointed with TFIC at first because it was a progression from With Joe Riley/It's a Trap so we'll see. I'm definitely not writing this album off yet though. With that being said, I agree with cwhit - the production quality on this is bad, especially compared to TFIC."
i mentioned this in my review but I think TFIC and KONM compliment each other better than they compete against each other. They feel like two parts of a story and, couple with The Animals Are Out which is underrated but not quite as good, make a really solid arc of albums.
TFIC is the panic, the anger and the depression, KONM is the breathing room in the aftermath while the thoughts still linger in your head
this is a very good way to put it. the exhale after a panic attack in a way. TFIC felt like the world was crumbling, KONM feels like the beginning steps of rebuilding that world.
Managed to make it over to see them after tigers jaw and caught them two tracks deep into playing this record in full... it was really really good.
I forgot this came out. I've been stuck in Rozwell Kid's latest. Going to give this a listen tonight.
In TFIC I was definitely more a fan of Bobby's songs but I think it's much more even or honestly maybe I'm leaning towards enjoying Leo's more. Still need to listen more though
Listened to this a few times so far and honestly it just doesn't hit me anywhere near as much as TFIC. I'd argue that TFIC is criminally underrated overall and would say it's one of my favorite records of the last 5 or so years. On first listen, the only tracks that really measure up to those would be Cannonless, Hunting Trip, and Crow. Definitely going to spend more time with it, but definitely a bit let down so far, which was my sentiment/worry with the singles, too.
I have some similar feelings towards those songs as well. I think those songs sound the most, out of the album, as a natural progression of TFIC. However, I don't find the album as a letdown. I enjoy listening to it (only on my 3rd spin though).
Finally listened to this today after discovering their last a couple weeks ago. Definitely a new fan, both are good. Trying year is such a cathartic song.
I can't see this resonating with me on a personal level the way TFIC did, but this is a step up in every conceivable way pretty much. Vocals, song structure, pacing. Very fucking good.
Just had my second listen this morning. This album is going to land Top 5 at the end of the year, for sure.
I think this album will grow on people. I think it's fantastic. I love the second to last track with the 5/4 time signature such a cool feel
I'm the king of all the land, I'm the king of no man, now lick my wounds and wait for you... only you
