This album kicks ass. I was just listening to "Hunting Trip" and was like this fucking awesome, but so familiar, little did I know this was on his solo album haha
im actually glad i didnt listen to his solo album much. going back to it i prefer the CWS versions. the more i sit with this, and again i dont mean to DrewB (drew if ur reading this its too late), the more I realize I probably ENJOY listening to this more than I do TFIC. I think TFIC is ultimately better but I'll probably end up listening to this one more as time goes on. Kinda like OTIP and ATP, I think ATP is easier for me to listen too because some of OTIP is so intertwined with a darker time in my life, much like TFIC, but I do think OTIP is a better record if that makes sense. basically the Barnett bros can do no wrong and I am absolutely thrilled to have them both making such top notch punk rock music
hey i wrote some words if you wanna read them on whatever device you normally read stuff on Captain, We're Sinking - The King of No Man (album review ) | Sputnikmusic
if my review is bad or poorly written or rambly please tell me because i need to improve im mediocre so any help is good help
Enjoyed the review! I'm giving the album my first listen currently, so hopefully I have a similar opinion as you! (Only listened to Trying Year a handful of times...didn't LOVE it but was content with it.)
I knooooow I wish Jeremy and Sputnik would do a supporter option but frankly the forums of Sputnik are awful, not in terms of people but in terms of how they're formatted and organized and how god damn difficult they are to access and navigate. But it's all good all the discussion happens on reviews anyhow
Those Sputnik commenters are very harsh in parts. This is certainly not the mess that a lot of those commenters would have you believe, esp that one with the "delete request." Your review is very concise and focused, actually, in that your main point seems to be the bands growth and improvement and general change vs where they were with TFIC. Irt the grammar comments, I'm personally a big believer that if your grammar doesn't hinder intelligibility then you are fine. Good review, has me excited to listen to the album. My only actual criticism is certain lines of transition read as maybe you're going down a list. Other than that, cool review!
Idk what those peeps are talking about the production isn't really that big of a setback imo. Great review!
Holy cow I forgot this comes out tomorrow. Taking a big road trip tomorrow, maybe I'll wait for that before I give it a full listen.
I'm loving the positive response this record is getting, at least on this forum. In regards to punk albums that have come out this year (since you guys brought it up), even as a huge Menz fan myself I cannot seem to like After the Party. I think it's the production but I don't really even find much to latch on to with the songwriting outside of a few songs like "Lookers." I also haven't really gotten hooked on that Rise Against album either. I'm hoping there are some good releases this summer or fall to fill that gap for me because this is really the first record of this sound to grab me this year.
Sputnik has always been known to be hyper critical, so always take anything over there with about a truck ton of salt.
thank you all for the kind words. im happy that its giving the band some more exposure and im glad the band themselves liked the review since they retweeted it the Sputnikmusic crowd is a bit......snobbish? i guess is the word. since anyone, staff or user, can submit reviews there tends to be a large circle of users on that site that dont actually contribute reviews but instead just go around shitting on any new review that comes up in their feed. Now I'm not saying you HAVE to write reviews to be able to critique a review, you dont need to be a chef to know when food tastes bad, but it gets to the point where its like....ok, let it go lol. if you derive pleasure from just shitting all over someones writing then maybe you need to reevaluate your priorities. Aside from that one negative comment on my review everyone else has been positive but there are some people who just cant catch a break and will have people CONSTANTLY belittling their writing no matter how well written it actually is. its like diet p4k or something, being snobs for the sake of being a snob lol. i think the production was intentional, it feels like they kinda wanted to do what The Hotelier did on Goodness and make an album with more breathing room and more space but this can lead to the album as a whole sounded empty or flat and i can see how that would be an issue but to me its like pinching an elephant: slightly annoying but not disastrous due to the strength of whats there (in this case the songwriting and the musicianship) whereas if the songs were already kinda mediocre then it would be akin to shooting a wounded deer, youre just piling on to an already bad situation.
Sputnik crowd is wild, there's some really nice people (a bunch of my old writers came from there and ended up going back as staff on there) but generally it's pretty overly opinionated
I was at the NYC boat show tonight, their set was pretty short but I'm glad I got to see them again. I feel like Leo needed to up his mic volume or something though, I couldn't hear his lyrics as well as Bobby. Still a good show. Menzingers were great as well but it was such a small room for so many sweaty dudes
