I know Afraid of Ghosts is something that was a total snapshot of his life, and that he had to put out, and it's awesome.... but I am glad that he seems to be going back to Peachtree/Spade vibes for this new one, let's do thissssss Those videos are so good
There is a video of one new song from last night so far. Wilder at Heart. It's posted by a visitor on his FB page, but I can't link to it at the moment. It's acoustic, but definitely more upbeat and nostalgic lyrically. I like it a lot on first listen.
Ha, he co-wrote a song on the Train Christmas album. Mostly, I think he's been focusing on producing and writing his own stuff, though. As I wrote in my farewell piece last week, Butch was also the reason I discovered AbsolutePunk!
I feel like Peachtree and Afraid of Ghosts have more in common than Peachtree and The Spade. But he's really never made two records that sound exactly alike. From the clips we've heard, this will be another change of pace.
I always felt like Peachtree was the natural progression from The Spade towards a more... country/folk vibe, but Afraid just kinda fell into straight up singer-songwriter type minimal stuff to me, I don't really think any Peachtree songs would work anywhere in Afraid of Ghosts, but I think any one of them could find their way into The Spade without anyone questioning it
Yeah, that's a good point. I guess what I mean is that, thematically, it feels like the other side of the coin of Afraid of Ghosts. Like, Ghosts is the eulogy and Peachtree is the celebration and goodbye. Sonically, it is closer to The Spade, but I still have a tough time saying any of those songs would fit on there. There was this raucous, freewheeling, fun vibe to The Spade that I don't think you get on Peachtree. It's a good deal more reflective. With that said, I could see "Day Drunk" being on Peachtree Battle.
Ah yes, thematically and lyrically you're totally right. I was definitely speaking more sonically and musically
New stuff sort of sounds like The Spade mixed with the power pop feel of Letters, and that would be the best possible outcome as far as I'm concerned. Haha
I wish more rock/indie artists did the surprise album drop like the big hip hop artists, cmmmon Butch drop it on Friday!!!
If he couldn't land a hit with "Mixtape" I'm not convinced it can ever happen, but I wouldn't mind being proven wrong.
Yep, going to have to make the "only playing these once" promise, because I want the album to be a mostly new experience when it arrives.
Or like, "Favourite Son", "I've Been waiting for this", and "Synthesizers". All those songs were ridiculously catchy.
I think "Synthesizers" was the only one of those that had much of a chance. He has a ton of very catchy songs, but very few with that "radio" sound. I do think "Mixtape" could have been a hit if marketed correctly, though.
Synthesizers reminds me of "Come on Eilen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners SO much. I love it. @Craig Manning
Gah, I'm trying so hard not to listen to those live vids. It's killing me. I hope he gets a hit off this album though, that would be great to see. He deserves one of his own after all he's done for beaucoup pop stars.
Have you seen him live? Whenever he plays that song, he does a snippet of "Come on Eileen" in there. Interesting, though, that Butch had no hand in writing "Synthesizers."
