This is more or less how I feel about the M3 records now too. RSG was a favorite of mine for a long time, but as I've gotten older, I've been less drawn to that style of songs and lyrics from him. I honestly think it's like a sequel to that record, but better in literally every single way. I would be kind of surprised if you didn't like it more than The Spade. I have no concrete insight into that, but I'm thinking it could stream this week. He premiered Ghosts a week ahead of its release, and he hadn't even announced the tour for that record when it came out. He starts the tour tomorrow, so I think he would want to get this to people as quickly as possible so they can sing/scream along, since it's that kind of record. ho knows: he might even start selling it on tour tomorrow night. Letters is the obvious recommendation, but you could also wait for this to drop and then go from there.
Haha, I knew Craig would say Letters. The Spade is the most fun Butch album (besides maybe this, which I haven't heard yet), so I usually recommend it first. It's also the album that got me into Butch.
I agree about it being the most fun. I'd recommend The Spade too @JRGComedy. Especially since Craig said Stay Gold is like a sequel to it.
Letters is my second favorite of all time, so I'm going to make you listen to that eventually. But going for this one next can't hurt, since it's fucking awesome.
And regardless of how you feel about any of those albums, once the weather starts to cool and the leaves start to turn, put on Afraid of Ghosts and give it your full attention.
This, The Spade, and The Rise and Fall are his most "fun." Afraid of Ghosts is his saddest. Letters, Sycamore Meadows, and this are his best mix of moods, styles, and influences.
Actually maybe I'll do spade then this. If this is like a sequel then I should hear the original first
P.S. liked your piece on Snowbird Songs today (yesterday maybe?). Didn't know you were younger than me, haha, you've been a part of this site for a while. My piece goes up on Thursday!
That's fuckin' cool how Record Store uses Suzanne from HoneyHoney in the narrative. Discovered that band on the JRE podcast, haha. She's got some pipes.
Probably a decent plan. This album is kind of Sycamore Meadows plus The Spade. Plus, the first HoneyHoney record was produced by Dave Cobb, who is like Butch's childhood friendly apparently, and who also did those Isbell and Stapleton records. It's a small, small world.
To think I've been listening to Butch's music before I really knew who Butch was (that is to say, all I knew was he was the lead singer in Marvelous 3) is surreal. Letters was the record that made me think, "oh okay, this dude is even better than I know!" I was already a pretty big M3 fanboy (and LOSC was a fixture for me at 19), but I had no idea I'd ever reach this point where he had a devoted and loyal following of people who probably thought the same thing for awhile. I just find that stuff cool to think about. I'm a big ol' sunshine-drinkin', flower pickin' hippie when I reflect on music haha
Heyyyyy nice! Thanks a lot! That was today; I'll be sure to look out for yours! And yeah I've been writing for AP/chorus since 2013 haha. I'd just turned 15
Yep after my marathon I feel about the same way. All varying degrees of (Stay) Gold. Letters is still my favorite by a pretty decent margin.
I remember the first review I read of yours was The Future Is Cancelled and I was like "this guy and me would be good friends" 3 years later and here we are :,)
Woah, how did we get through last year without me making you listen to Afraid of Ghosts? Letters is his "scene classic." It's pretty untouchable.
I've always been a bit surprised it didn't reach the same audience Everything in Transit did. Those albums are like spiritual cousins, imo. I hear a lot of similarities in feel, sound, and theme. Probably why I love them both so much.
Yeah yeah I can totally see that. This kind of story arc of a summer with a bit of a darker side explored here and there. They both have a warm feeling to them. They both also do that thing well of "this is really catchy but man these lyrics are sad" haha
