I realized this today and thought, “Wow, six years to the day since his last album!” Sometimes, I forget American Love Story exists…

Also I recommend checking out the Marvelous 3 records. I got into Marvelous 3 as they were out in the late 90s / early 00s and it already showcased Butch as a songwriter in a league of his own. The early stuff is great power pop stuff.

    Things have changed.

I thought the same thing as I saw Jason's post, forgetting American Love Story. Whoops.

In fairness, it's the only album in Butch's catalog that I didn't flip for and play exhaustively. Every other album he made was a definitive album of the year it was released for me. So to have an album from him that I never had that kind of connection with, just in contrast to everything else he's ever made, it's easy for me to skip over it in my mind.

Love those records. Some of the lyrics have aged very badly, especially from Readysexgo. But his melodic gifts were already there, absolutely.

Oh definitely, some of the lyrics have definitely not aged well, but totally, that band should have been bigger, Butch in general should be.

I used to like RSG the most of the M3 records, but I think Hey! Album aged a bit better and is probably the finer album overall. Just some wildly good power pop choruses on that thing.

I’ve been playing that one a bit more again the last couple weeks while waiting for the new one. I still think it’s the combo of 6-Foot American Man and Flyover State right next to each other so early on that hurts it. They clearly the weakest of the bunch.

But there’s some classics in there. Gridlock is amazing and reminds me of my stupid home town. Fuck It is great, kinda Suburbia Pt 2. Pretty Crazy could fit right in on the Black Widows albums. You Gotta Just Be… is a blast of fun. The other tracks are ok as well if your brain isn’t hurting from that one two punch earlier in the lineup. Just too much of that stuff building up

Yeah RSG is a bit punchier but I agree, Hey! Album has aged better and the songs hold up a bit more.

First listen through of the new album didn't really draw me in - hopefully it grows on me. I'm finding myself listening to The Dangerous Summer's new album over and over

American Love Story definitely isn't "bad," but the concept/story keeps me from going back to it much. "Gridlock" is good, and stuff like "Out in the Open" has all of Butch's gifts for orchestration and production, but I just never felt inclined to go back to that album very much.

  13. enjoying this a lot. Roll Away and State Line Fireworks are early favorites along with Holy Water.

woke up i'm in the in-between honey

Some of these songs stand out more than others to me, but it's an enjoyable listen. Nearly every upbeat-ish Butch album just makes me want to go listen to The Spade, and this is no exception, it's a perfect album, what can I say. But I'm excited to see him live in just over a month, curious how much of this album will be in the setlist, these songs seem very much meant to be played live.

I've got a couple listens behind me now, and this album is absolutely incredible. I hear a lot of the musical influences/touchstones other people have already mentioned - Elton John, MeatLoaf - but I hear a few others that are maybe a little less cool to reference, but that I've always enjoyed personally, like The Eagles when Don Henley is singing.

The slower, more ballad-ish type songs really stood out to me on my initial listens and grabbed me very immediately, but honestly all of the songs are great and the whole album has a sweet, melancholy, nostalgic sound that is glorious.

After working hard to try to get into his last album and always having the feeling like I had to ignore large aspects of it to try to enjoy what good was actually there, it's a great feeling to have another Butch album that is just firing on all cylinders and I love without any reservations. I cannot wait to spend a lot of time getting to know and fall in love with these songs.

Loved my first listen of the album. The melody for Roll Away is an earworm.

Ummm so there's an entire Morgan Kibby partner album to this album coming too??

Correct! He talked about that in his livestream. Supposedly out early next year.

I had almost completely forgotten about that White Sea album from 2014, but I remember liking that record a lot. Will need to revisit it.

Yeah it's really solid, her second one was enjoyable too if you never heard it, from 2017

She completely fell off my radar after 2014. I'll check that out!

Really liking this album. Was surprised (but probably shouldn’t have been) that the Facebook group is almost entirely people pissing and mining that it doesn’t sound like Marvelous 3 or that they don’t care for this piano rock thing. I think it sounds like Butch with slightly more piano. He almost always has piano tracks. And this things is still loaded with guitar. It’s just more piano with the guitars.
