It ain’t “Ohio” that’s for sure. Generally in favor of anyone doing whatever they need to do this week to stay sane but this song isn’t one I will need to hear again. Underscores the gravity of the moment for an obsessive tinkerer like Bruce (even as the quality of the output has faded slightly) to be willing to write record and put this out in 3-4 days though.
The lyrics are intended to be very on the nose and straight. What's the issue exactly? The song is good but the message is more important.
“We’ll take a stand for this land/And the stranger in our midst” is a hell of a line. Saw a post somewhere that I think sums this up: whether or not you think it’s his best, it might be one of his most important songs. Like Craig said, hope it inspires more major artists to make a statement.
Love Bruce, hate what's happening in Minneapolis and agree with the sentiment, but don't need to hear this song again lol. I also find it curious as someone who lives in Chicago that why all of a sudden is the shit that's happened in minnesota the last few weeks finally the thing that's riled the country up? No one wants to acknowledge this it seems but we (along with LA and a few other cities) were terrorized by ICE for months before minnesota and there were murders and shootings and elementary school kids being teargassed in the streets, etc. Minneapolis, I think, is where the first white people have been killed by ICE since this all started last year, so perhaps that's the simple answer here.
The comments in here made me think it would be unlistenable. It’s fine. He sounds a bit old, sure, but he is. Not one of his best, but it’s okay, and considering it was written and recorded inside a few days, it’s pretty impressive.
You're completely right. Speaking as a resident of Minneapolis, the whole time ICE were in Chicago, I was shocked that there wasn't more reporting and backlash about it. I do think it's the fact that a white person was brutally and publicly killed in the streets. But it shouldn't have taken that to wake people up to the terrors that were already happening to POC and immigrants. I can only hope that what is happening now will only enable the country see where this is happening elsewhere, too. Re: the song. Objectively I can understand how this could feel like a miss to people, but damn as a Minneapolis resident right now it was pure catharsis. Feels incredibly meaningful to be seen by the boss in this way.
from what i read last night hes playing minneapolis on 3/31 so this is happening right away. annoucement today feels likely if this is real.
Minneapolis gets a pass for obvious reasons but otherwise someone needs to tell this guy about cities in the Midwest besides Chicago
