Bruce has so many songs I can't believe weren't bigger, and The Ties That Bind is definitely one of them.
the first 7 songs on the river are probably the best extended stretch of any of his records. just does not quit.
why the hell not 1. The River 2. Independence Day 3. The Ties That Bind 4. Sherry Darling 5. Cadillac Ranch 6. Wreck on the Highway 7. Out In the Street 8. Hungry Heart 9. Jackson Cage 10. Clearly, I really love the ballads on this record. I don’t think the ranking properly portrays how much I dig the bar band rock songs too, though. That balance between dark and light works so well.
You shafted “Stolen Car” so hard, and I can’t forgive it. One of his most desolately beautiful songs, and a more profound shot of hopelessness (imo) than anything on Nebraska.

Cadillac Ranch Harder than I expected. The top four is pretty interchangeable to me, and at one point or another I’m sure I’d considered each one the best song on the album.
I don't think you're alone in that, but I think the album version is way, way better. It has an atmosphere he never captured before or since, versus a piano ballad that sounds like "The Promise" and a lot of other Bruce piano ballads. No contest for me.
yeahhhh the promise is one of my favorite bruce tracks so even if it’s a bit repetitive of a sound for him, that doesn’t bother me at all haha
And I like the full-band version of "The Promise" from the box set better, so this all tracks for both of us!

I already didn’t really want to talk to murph just generally but please let him know that Cadillac Ranch at 20 = I am not speaking to him again thanks Barresi gets a pass by virtue of not being murph I know I overrated it but it’s better than Crush on You cmon
