Honestly, Bruce Springsteen's unreleased material over the years is like an entire alternate universe career of equally compelling and amazing music. I legitimately think his unreleased stuff could outdo many artists actual career of what they did release. When taken into account it lends a whole new dimension to the man's music and work.
I have spent too many hours creating an alternate universe of Bruce albums based on his unreleased stuff.
No brainer for me because I have A-List and I’m a big Bruce fan. The sound is incredible and the songs come off really close to how they sound on record. There’s shots and some narration from Bruce to introduce the songs.
@Craig Manning Re: your tweet about this over the summer, I'd like to introduce Mr. Mayer as a contender for the title of best artist to cover Tunnel of Love. Get someone in his band some vintage massive-sounding 80s synths and he'd crush it.
I had never heard this cover, but I love it. Mayer would for sure nail Tunnel of Love. He kind of made his own version of it with Battle Studies.
Hopefully this is the right place to post this... I've lived in NJ for almost 2 years now & my parents were never big Bruce fans, but I'm in Asbury Park all the time for shows & I feel like I'm doing myself a disservice not lending him my ears for a considerable amount of time. Where's a good starting point? What are your favorite albums? What are the general concensus "best" albums? Are new albums held in high regards? If you're a big fan please rant as long as you want, I'm here for it
I'd start with Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town. If you like those, there are a lot of different directions you could take, but those are the two that really made me a fan.
There are people here far more qualified to answer your question, but fwiw my entry point was the album Born to Run. I'd say that's a pretty safe place to start.
agreed on starting with BTR, i don't think there's a bad direction to go in after that but i'd probably spend some time with his earlier material before moving into the late 80s/90s material, just to make sure you're fully bought in.
Born to run is his opus for sure, but he has such a varied discography that almost surely there’s something for you. What kind of music are you into usually?
The Rising is what clicked with me. Then Magic. From there I went back and became obsessed with Born To Run, etc.
Agreeing with others, I'd start with Born to Run, and then when you're ready to try another record, start working your way through his catalog chronologically from that point until you get to Born in the USA. If you don't hear something in that five-album span that appeals to you, then Bruce maybe isn't for you because I think that almost all of his work before and after the ~1975-85 stretch are variations on or expansions of the themes and musical styles he explored in that period. Happy listening!
Anothet E Street album is exactly what i freaking need ughhh yess pleasee even though i have spun Western Stars 3 times this week and i still love it the same
