Nah The Rising and Magic are both better. Edit: just saw your Born in the USA post, wayyyy off base haha
So, it's safe to say that Bruce is the coolest dude in music, right? I can't think of anybody who might come close, aside from maybe Bjork or Paul.
Nebraska is great, but it's my least favorite of the first eight and is easily his most overrated record, IMO. It's a little too one-note for me to put it among the best of his stuff, and I think the songs on Tunnel of Love have stronger melodies and are more emotionally satisfying. There are at least four Tunnel songs that would contend for my Bruce top 30, versus just one from Nebraska.
Well, we're just going to have to agree to disagree on that one. Nebraska is the Bruce album I pick as my favorite on most days. I really loved my first 5 listens Tunnel of Love though... maybe it will move up. What a great feeling to get gifts like this--albums from an artist I love's discography that I missed from a period when they are on the top of their game. It's why the Bruce b-side collections have been so awesome... seems like almost everything he wrote from '73 to '87 is better than 99% of music. That's a hell of a run.
Nebraska is just one of the ones I've never really connected with personally. I admire it from more of a distance, but it doesn't have the resonance for me that at least 10 of his other records do. I get why people hold it in high esteem, from a songwriting perspective, but it isn't my favorite mode of Bruce at all. I know about you mean about the b-sides stuff, though. I was running through The Promise a few weeks ago and so many of those songs are great.
I like the songs on Greetings, but think the recordings are pretty shoddy and that it's kind of a mess. Tunnel is way, way more fully realized work. Far superior album.
That's always been my issue with Greetings, it's so all over the place it's almost difficult to listen to full through. It might be the "big" Springsteen album I return to by far the least.
I almost never listen to it in full. It's always songs in isolation or on playlists, but it's not a cohesive whole...at all. The live version of it from Clarence's last tour is honestly way, way better than the recorded version.
Okay yeah that's 100% fair. I mean Bruce basically says it was recorded pretty haphazardly, what with Columbia not expecting it to be a full-band record and everything. The every live versions of those songs are leagues better than the studio versions for sure, even more so than the usual Bruce live boost. I love Tunnel don't get me wrong. But it's probably near the bottom of my top 10
is there a current recorded live show available for purchase that features this? I have bought a select few shows of his from the past, and i always buy the ones I've seen in person. I have like 19 hours of live springsteen shows and could always stand to add more lol
Tunnel is either top five for me at this point or just outside of it. Greetings is probably not in my top 10. I don't know if they've put it up for purchase. I downloaded it off BTX back in 09.
Nebraska is my favorite and Born To Run is the only thing that comes close. I really need to spend some time with Tunnel though.
BTR Darkness The River or Wild/Innocent (depending on my mood) that would be my top 3 in that order can't put Greetings ahead any of those by any stretch.
Yeah, I would say most peoples lists all start around the same but once you get out of the top 3 or 4 it goes in complete different directions
Review: Bruce Springsteen's Broadway Show Is an Intimate Triumph If I can't somehow win the ticket lottery for this between now and February the rest of my life will have an * next to it.
These days, my top five Bruce records are: Born to Run Darkness The River Born in the USA Tunnel of Love Wild and Wrecking Ball flit in and out of that.
