I thought this was good, but not quite great. It tends to suffer the same ol Apatow problems, where scenes feel like they’re sketches that they’re trying to shoehorn to a bigger narrative but don’t connect. Some of the acting feels a little improv-like and stiff. The editing is choppy and the cinematography is kind of bland. But Eichner and Macfarlane do have great chemistry and there are some scenes, like Eichner’s big speech on the beach that are very touching and heartfelt. There’s also a lot of laughs. It’s also cool to see a mainstream movie that is unapologetically gay with multiple sex scenes. It’s gonna mean a lot to a lot of people. I just wish it was a little shorter and had some parts tightened up.
Really liked this! Definitely echo a lot of the complaints/negatives that @Zilla noted and even my fiancé picked up on the weird editing which she usually is able to ignore but this was a really funny and sincere movie
Yep, pretty good but not great. Typical romcom problems. But I love Billy so much. Biggest laugh might have been Bowen yang’s museum exhibit at the end haha
There were a ton of great lines, my theater probably had less than 20 people and I felt like I was laughing harder than everyone else
Unfortunately this bombed. Really thought it was gonna connect. But comedies are apparently a tough sell and having no star probably did it no favors.
This was pretty good, much better than Fire Island. The only weird thing was that scene where he asks Billy’s character to top him. That is absolutely not how that conversation would go in real life, it felt strange. Also, Bowen Yang’s ride really needs to be built somewhere, that part at the end was hilarious.
There’s a million factors that played into this bombing as bad as it did - you can't point to one single thing. It’s all of the things. There’s been talk about why isn’t there a Blumhouse for comedy - and the reason is because you can’t do comedy for as cheap as horror since it relies heavily on star power. The most successful comedies are built around a comedic persona typically which isn’t cheap. I know the Apatow formula in the 2000s was to anoint a new comedy star - but if you look closely every one of those were built around someone that popped in a supporting role in a previous hit. Old School gets Will Ferrell Anchorman. Anchorman gets Steve Carell The 40 Year Ole Virgin. That gets Seth Rogen Knocked Up. That gets Jonah Hill Superbad and Jason Segal Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Even Bridesmaids was a launching pad for Melissa McCarthy. Sadly because of the current market, Billy hasn’t had a chance to pop in a movie before this - which translates over to helping him out sell this one to a bigger audience. Comedy is just so fractured now across podcasts, tiktok, streaming shows, etc
found this one to be quite funny and well acted but like all apatow productions way too long. the reasons it is bombing are mostly dumb and in bad faith though. hope billy and luke get more lead roles.
i liked this a lot. wayyyyyy too many long monologues !! but funny overall and would watch again. we were the only only two in the theater lol
