Feel Good Lost is a perfect ambient album. YFIIP and the self-titled are perfect indie rock albums. Bee Hives is extremely cool. Forgiveness Rock Record and Hug of Thunder are both fantastic. All of the side projects are good to great. These guys have never disappointed IMO.
agreed that the EPs and loosie collections don't hit as hard, but they're firmly an album band for me.
the s/t was a good album with a bunch of good songs on it but it also signposted that they were becoming a less interesting more "normal indie rock band" sounding act with an expanded lineup adding some bells and whistles also there are at least a half dozen lines on "it's all gonna break" I would prefer not to hear again
Yeah, I would not describe the self titled as normal indie rock sounding at all. There’s a ton of experimentation on that album. It sounds like a million people are playing on it at once
Yfiip is tighter and better but it’s like a 10 vs a 9. Might just be overreacting to the hyden list but I feel like their 2002-10 dominance has been forgotten a bit. You look at the million person lineup and wanna write them off as such of a time but they had the songs to back it up and the sound of those records is still insane
Hyden has never been a Broken Social Scene fan, which is kind of odd. But he never mentions them, I think they’re a big blind spot for him, or a band he’s just never understood/liked.
Forgiveness Rock Record was my entry point into them so it’s my fav. Sweetest Kill still stops me in my tracks. It’s my “Desperado”
“World Sick” and “Sweetest Kill” are for sure all timers. I think it’s a really good record, but I still have it in the 4 slot….which again, a comment on how good of a band they were (are?). Not sure they ever need to put out anything else ever again unless they feel really confident about it, which I feel like is how they operate anyway. If they could get Feist back in the fold for one more full album I could see it.
I heard him say on indiecast at some point that they’re a band he should like he’s just never given them a fair shake or something to that effect
Kinda wild to think it's been nine years since this one. I liked Let's Try The After quite a bit, so I'm looking forward to whatever this ends up being.
