the modern music world is nuts. Imagine John Lennon asking Jimi Hendrix to make his photo "thermal"

This is basically all I've been listening to since yesterday. Loved saturation trilogy , but don't think I was in love with any of them as much as I am with this one.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

"the group’s MCs pass cardboard confessions back and forth like, “Could be stronger than vibranium/Don’t mean that I ain’t fragile” by McLennon, and, “Suicidal thoughts, but I know I won’t do it,” by rapper and engineer JOBA."

is it just me or a) that second quote is Kevin not Joba and b) passing off a line like that as "cardboard" is incredibly dismissive and shitty of the reviewer??

is there motivation in negative spaces?

Nah that's definitely Joba but I agree with it being shitty of the reviewer. He also called a Dom lyric "faux sad-boy deepness."

Every review on Pitchfork that refers to Ameer as being the best rapper in the group makes me want to throw my computer through my window.

Kevin doesn't actually spit verses often but when he does he's the best rapper in the group imo

ugh. seems like some hot take shithead who knows absolutely nothing about the band members. not liking their music is fine but it takes literally a few seconds to find out about, say, Dom's struggles with mental health through google, and then not type that fucking garbage in your review

SWAN DIVE IN THE 405 WITH THE PRECISION OF A CUT FROM A ZORRO KNIFE

They think Dom is too self-consciously wordy. Meanwhile Ameer is like "I used to sell drugs/ Roll with my gang of thugs/I don't trust anyone/Never got one hug." and they're like "Clear eyed bars that set you up with sly street tautologies before gutting you with emotional body blows". Not to say that his style wasn't enjoyable or that he couldn't occasionally switch it up and do something surprising, but the dude had a very specific lane that he rarely went out of.

Nah haven't you heard, he's the good hooks/leader/gay and a mediocre rapper.

his entire set of bars on Sat 3 consisted of "I got a lot of demons / and I been fightin with em / and I been druggin with em / my drugs been fightin demons" etc etc. Dom on the other hand never seems to run out of great lyrics

It made for a really great verse on "Junky" but he kind of just spun his wheels after that.

I can't stop cackling at "my drugs been fightin demons".

This is more about all of the bad rap reviews that I've read on Pitchfork than this one in particular. I'm just blowing off steam. Don't care that he doesn't like it. I'm just tired of a website that coasts on its influential reputation putting out hacky stuff meant to provoke people. I thought that the BNM review of the new Joey Purp album was mediocre and I like Joey Purp.

There's loads to love about this and there's so many very specific UK influences on this album that are cool to pick out. That change of pace on 'Weight' and the grime-y London sound of 'District'.

Anything Dom touches on this is my favourite. He has such a nice delivery (one of the weirdest criticisms of him in that pitchfork review) and carries a lot of emotion in everything he says. That verse in 'Weight' is unreal.

Still getting to grips with this, nothing as immediate to me as anything from Sat trilogy but easily 'Honey', 'Berlin' and 'Weight' are the best. 'Tonya' sounds so much better recorded and I can relate to it a lot more now in this format, especially when Kevin comes in.

Joba is good on this too. Not enough Matt - I really loved his contributions on 1997 Diana.
