Today I’m excited to share with everyone the latest single from punk band, Broadway Calls, called “A Little Shake.” On this electric single, Broadway Calls channel their love for slick harmonies and breakneck hooks into a crowd-pleasing song. I was also able to catch up with lead vocalist and guitarist Ty Vaughn for a brief interview below.

Can you tell me the story behind your new single, “A Little Shake”? Also, what went into the writing and recording of this track?

Started with the riff. Kinda just built off that and put the music together with the full band before attempting any vocals. Usually with this band, our songs start with the vocal melody. But this time it was the riff, and when that happens our songs usually end up sounding a little different. “Radiophobia” is a great example. So we got the music put together and then when it was time to start vocals and lyrics, I wanted to write a love song. A sexy love song. Our last record (Sad In The City) was written in 2019 and lyrically it’s a pretty dark, violent record. I didn’t want to get stuck in that mode. I wanted to celebrate love. “A Little Shake” is about sharing a little apartment with my wife before we were married when we first started dating. We made a bed down in her basement/laundry room because it was too hot upstairs in the summer. We loved it down there. We recorded with Scott Goodrich at his home studio and Nu Tone where we did Sad and our self-titled LP.

I understand your band will be hitting the road this month <April>. What songs are you most excited to play live, and how would you describe your shows in general?

I always love playing “Radiophobia.” That song has a killer energy and I love the guitar solo and the breakdown/bridge. We usually think of the audience when writing our setlist. We’ll be touring with Teenage Bottlerocket this time, so we will pack as many fast/upbeat songs as we can into our set.

What keeps your band motivated as artists?

I think it’s the satisfaction we all feel when we get together and create something. And it doesn’t have to be a new song. We spent a lot of time brainstorming for our last music video “Dead Before I Hit The Ground”. We filmed everything ourselves and it was really fun. I feel like we are all motivated to be creative right now but that doesn’t mean we want to tour constantly or anything. We get together once a week and have a blast.

If you were to do a collaboration with another artist in today’s scene, who would it be and why?

That’s easy: Morrissey. I used to dream of opening for Green Day, but now all I want to do is meet Morrissey and talk with him about everything. Any topic. Literally the only celebrity I have any desire to meet. He’s a lyrical and melodic genius.

Was this the Sunday late morning/early afternoon show at Cobra Lounge? If so, I was there too and it did indeed rule.

Hahah yep- that was definitely a unique show. I remember watching Catbite and thinking about how much they reminded me of 90's No Doubt... and then they played a spot on cover of Sunday Morning. God I love weird shows like that.

A band that should seriously be way bigger than they are. Hooks a-plenty for this band and the energy is so great.

Catbite is a ton of fun live, and 100% agree with the early No Doubt comparisons. Hopefully they have a similar trajectory, as the band deserves great things ahead!

Agreed. I'd never heard of them until I saw them open up a couple of different shows right when things started to thaw out after Covid, and both times it was pretty obvious that they've got the potential to be huge. They seem like good people and they clearly work and tour their asses off, so very much agreed. Hope they're around a long time.

I was definitely nerding out hard over hearing them play Sunday Morning on a Sunday morning. And nope I hadn't seen that. Awesome as always, thanks for sharing.
