See that doesn't bother me. And there's no way to know how much or little he was told or forced to look to religion. Maybe people WERE being really strong about it with him, so he reacted very strongly back. It's not the best way to react most of the time but why not get it out by putting it in a song rather than taking it with him down the road.
Sure, it doesn’t bother you, but it’s still a disrespectful move to say “fuck your faith”. People may have been strong about it but in interviews released around the time of the album he didn’t state that and only mentioned how prayer was recommended during rehab and that he didn’t understand why people looked to a higher power instead of themselves to get over addiction. The song itself reflects that as he makes a joke over people being “born again” through the programs at rehab.
That's fair. Where I really stand is that him having all these feelings, I just think it's much better to get it all out in the lyrics and then be done with it and not bring all that animosity to his actual life. I look at it being more therapeutic, even with negative thoughts like that. Now if he was going on every song even on That's The Spirit and this new one with it and was just overly hostile even in his day to day life, obviously there's something much deeper there. But for whatever reason in that time period he felt overwhelmed with these people telling him over and over to seek God, and Sempiternal is what it manifested as. Again, he is far from the best lyricist especially on subjects like that but I think there's some credence to it all.
I wasn't expecting the video this soon, since they didn't release it with the premiere, but I can't even watch it until tonight - glad it was worthwhile and liked!
Despite the break, nothing has changed vocally performance wise which is a bit of a shame. Guess we'll have to deal with the backing tracks for the rest of their career.
i mean, i can hear that there's backing tracks to beef up the vocals which is kinda silly and cheap, but you can still hear oli actually singing over most of it (you can tell cause it's a bit off key...) i didn't think it was a bad performance though.
