I won't let myself get sucked into this debate again BUT "We Did It When We Were Young" perfectly wraps up the themes of the album and can't be removed ok I'm done.

I lived in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn for a brief period a few years ago, a very short walk to Union Street and President Street. I kind of thought they were the streets alluded to in She Loves You, and that Brian just took some artistic license in changing Union Street to Avenue. So one of my favorite nerdy things to do was walk those two streets while listening to that song.

Come to find out after I moved back to Boston, he actually lived on Union Street when he was there, so I felt pretty vindicated, haha.

That quote doesn’t surprise me at all. I’ve read other interviews where Brian has made similar comments. I’m just happy he’s still making music

This video sums up what I was saying was so special about the "Songs for the Hymnal" show:

"To this day, I've been all of em at certain times. And you will be too, it's okay. It's okay to be the bad guy sometimes, sometimes you're the good guy. And then sometimes you'll be the good guy and people will take advantage of you, and sometimes you'll take advantage of them. That's life. And when you're dead, you'll look back on it all. And maybe we'll be ghosts together. And we'll say this...

Mary this station is playing every sad song, I remember like we were alive."

For me there's no reason it has to be one or the other - they're both amazing songs. Plus, American Slang is a pretty short album anyways. Some EP's are longer. For a long time my version of AS has ended like this:

    9.) The Spirit of Jazz
    10.) She Loves You
11.) We Did It When We Were Young

Not a knock on WDIWWWY, but "She Loves You" is just too damn good to not be in the album. Period.

    * Edited to add that I've always heard the line "while Union Avenue..." as "while you who never knew..." until literally this moment. I didn't know what you guys were talking about with the Union Ave stuff but I just listened to the song again and had a holy shit moment.

She Loves You I an essential Gaslight Anthem song. I’d put it as a song 10 too. Kinda like a Mae before National Anthem.

WDIWWWY is important because if you end off American Slang with this song, you roll into The Horrible Crowes Last Rites. It sets up the ‘what’s next” to perfection.

Saw him in Glenside last night (near Philly). The show was great. I didn't know how hilarious he is.

Show last night was great, aside from the heckler in the back balcony. Even with Brian nicely telling him off a few times, he just kept on shouting things at him in between songs.

I don’t get why you’d pay money to do that.

I really don't understand either. Only thing I can think of is the person just had too much to drink and is an obnoxious asshole when drunk...

There is nothing worse than hearing "Bruce" chants at Gaslight/Fallon shows.

The guy was just straight up obnoxious, not sure if he was drunk. Seemed like he was just craving attention. A few examples:

    1. Screamed "GET HURT!" at Brian as he was transitioning to piano. Brian said something about having a set song list and suggested tweeted at him before the next day's show with a request. He did seem annoyed about it.

    2. Screamed "STURGILL!" when Brian mentioned he went to a Sturgill Simpson last week.

    3. After Brian concluded "Steve McQueen", the guy just shouted out "PAUL NEWMAN!". Brian made a joke about Newman's association with salad dressing and it wouldn't make as good of a song title. Told the guy to stick to his day job and it was clear he had hit his limit with the guy.

It's a shame I remember more about what this guy was screaming than how great of a set it was.

That was Sunday night in Brooklyn right?

I was there too and didn't think the heckling was that bad. Dude def. spoke up too many times but Brian handled it well. I do know someone got thrown out for being a dick during Craig Finn's set though.

Also there were three blackout drunk dudes right behind me who I thought could pass out at any minute, but they knew every word to every song and sang a long a bit too loud haha, I always get stuck next to the worst people at shows...

This happens because Gaslight/Fallon fans are the actual worst people. I have a problem with the crowd every time I've seen them.

Except Chicago this past time. So maybe the Cleveland fans are just terrible

They were awful in Michigan too unfortunately. Chicago was perfect though

I’ve been in much, much worse crowds than I’ve seen at Fallon/Gaslight shows. The Chicago crowd for the T59S show was one of my favorite audiences I’ve ever been a part of.

I got made fun of at the Brian Fallon show in Cleveland for wearing a Menzingers shirt if that tells you anything about how awful lol

Fallon/Gaslight shows in NY are a bunch of dudes with “nice guy syndrome” oozing from all of their pores and it is indeed the worst, it always feels like a quarter of the crowd is there searching for their meet-cute. i remember one time at Terminal 5 on the Get Hurt shows Brian had to stop Blue Dahlia because some kid in a backpack tried to open a pit with a bunch of people that weren’t having it

worth it for the show though.

however the crowd for Gaslight in NJ for Skate and Surf that one year was transcendent and my last Fallon show left a terrible taste in my mouth so i’m sure i’m painting with too broad a brush

one time @Thomas Nassiff was at a Gaslight show i was at and it bears repeating that he is a tree of a person
