In terms of wrapping up themes, I think "The Backseat" wins that round, but I think that WDIWWWY actually serves as a great stylistic transition into "Elsie" in terms of lyrical themes and sound (softer dynamics throughout that slowly transition to a big chorus [i.e. "Blood Loss"])
For me Have Mercy is one of the best songs Brian Fallon has ever written. Top 3 probably, if I'm being honest. It has never even crossed my radar that the song sounds unfinished. I didn't know people even thought that about it...
Have Mercy couldve made a killer opener for Get Hurt. its great. im also quite partial to Halloween, "me, im a tomb, a corpse in a suit just trying to look a little alive" is one of my favorite Fallon lyrics.
Yeah, when I say "Halloween" should have been part of the tracklist for Get Hurt, I really mean the original version. That one is one of my top tier Gaslight songs, I absolutely love it. The Get Hurt version just doesn't have the same energy.
I saw them live one time where they played all 3 of Have Mercy, Mama's Boys, and Sweet Morphine......can't imagine that happened more than 1-2 other times max. Really cool show.
My favorite was them opening with Mae. Gave me goosebumps. Still does. And I saw their first time ever playing Halloween so that was super special too.
I can’t even find the MATZ version of Smoke anymore, but I did like it better in that faster tempo. Edit: Nevermind. The last time I looked he had taken the all down but there’s a new one up.
The claps in Smoke make the song so much bigger......For me. The MATZ version, fine song, didn't thrill me. The Painkillers version is my favorite song on a GREAT album.
Can't wait to listen to this Friday. In preparation I just listened to Painkillers. "Open All Night" is one my favorite things Brian Fallon has done.
Was this in Boston...??? I saw them play it live in Boston and I thought that was then playing it for the first time...
I was also at that show! Friggen awesome opening with Mae and also awesome hearing Halloween live the first time!
Yeah that was an incredible show!!! Mae for an opener, Halloween live debut, and we got both She Loves You & Blue Dahlia. One of my favorite concerts ever.
I agree with this. I've never really cared for the Get Hurt version of Halloween. Ever since I heard it in concert at the Boston show I was wishing for a studio version, but the one we got with Get Hurt has always sounded weird and flat to me.
I was also at that Boston show haha! My second time seeing them ever. My first time was earlier that year at the Middle East right before Handwritten came out. Think they were purposely doing a tour of smaller venues before the big major label debut came out -- what a first show to go to. Think they played Mulholland Drive for the first time.
That is an amazing video! Look how f---ing happy Brian looks there when the song is starting off! He is beaming. I love it.
