59 Sound Elsie American Slang Sleepwalkers Get Hurt Sink or Swim Painkillers Handwritten I love them all so much though
.... 1.American slang 2.Get Hurt 3.Handwritten 4.Sink or Swim 5. The '59 sound ....I love them all though. It just happened that American Slang and Get Hurt were albums that got me through the break up and some health issues
I definitely need more time with Sleepwalkers before I can properly rank it. But it'll be in the top half, for sure.
I haven't listened to Sleepwalkers yet, but... Elsie '59 Sound Handwritten American Slang Get Hurt Painkillers Sink or Swim Elsie over '59 may be a hot take, but it's just where I'm at right now. I got into Brian late, so I don't have the attachment to '59 that most do. Handwritten is the one that I have the most attachment to because it was how I discovered TGA. I love that album and will never understand the hate (both actual and relative to the rest of his catalog) that some on here have for it.
The only fault I can find with Handwritten is that "Too Much Blood" really slows the album down. Take that track out, put "Desire" in it's place and then put "Blue Dahlia" after "Biloxi Parish", and you've got yourself a damn classic.
Elsie American Slang Sleepwalkers Get Hurt Painkillers 59 Sound Sink or Swim Handwritten I think I'm a weird Gaslight/Brian Fallon fan.
'59 Sound Senor and the Queen Elsie American Slang Sink or Swim Get Hurt Sleepwalkers Painkillers Handwritten
That should be prefaced that I love them all. I just find myself going back to Get Hurt more than 59 Sound in this season of life. I was always a big fan of that record anyways. Never understood the critics on that one.
those first five are immovable outside of order, those records all mean the world to me. i like Handwritten but it's my least favorite.
This has really turned into a rank the albums thread. I need far more time with Sleepwalkers to decide where it will land for me.
Lyrically I relate heavily to this album and I think that’s why it’s hitting so hard with me. Obviously it’s fantastic musically, he tries a lot of really cool things on this album that he seemed to not want to experiment too much on Painkillers. I need more horns in my Brian Fallon songs for sure after hearing the title track.
after reading some of the recent interviews, i can def see where writing a new Gaslight record would be harder than ever. he has really successfully made it to where i don't know what to expect with the solo moniker, yet the Gaslight name however carries a bunch of (great) expectations with it
For me, any placement I make for Sleepwalkers in regards to any of the other albums is obviously tentative. It's only been a few days where I've had years in most cases with the rest of these albums. It's more just an indicator of how good I find it to be and a cool way of showing other fans which works you appreciate the most. It's really neat to see a fan on here who ranks Get Hurt above '59 Sound.
I haven't heard it yet, but I find it hard to accurately rank a new album until at least 20 listens. However, glad to see so many love it. I'm excited to hear there are horns and keys, can totally seeing those being a nice addition to his songwriting, wouldn't mind some mandolin at some point too. As for Get Hurt, if I was making a perfect album, I would add in Sweet Morphine, Mama's Boys, and Have Mercy, I would dump Stay Vicious and Stray Paper. 13 tracks. Break Your Heart is too good to ditch. People talk about the current bonus tracks not "fitting" the album, but Stay Vicious is by far the outlier for me, an oddball song, and I just don't like the song very much. As stated 1,000 times before, Stray Paper may not be the worst Gaslight song, but to me, it's always been the most boring, lazy, Gaslight-by-Numbers, Fallon on autopilot song. Just nothing special about it. Sounds like another band ripping them off or something......I wonder if he's referring to that song when he talks about it being unfinished. Bonus tracks would then have been Halloween, Stay Vicious, Stray Paper.
Their biggest album mistake was She Loves You. By far their best slow song as far as I'm concerned, and a top 10 Gaslight track overall........left by the side of the road........with a 10 track album that had room for an 11th. So strange.
Stay Vicious is definitely an odd song, but that's kinda why I dig it. Grungy as it may be, the opening guitar riff has a groove to it, plus like how the chorus pulls back dynamically and then goes into half-time with strings at the end. You're right about Stray Paper though. Gotta fit those blood metaphors in there somewhere I guess.
Lastly, everyone talks about Blue Dahlia and Have Mercy being B-Sides, and both takes are right.........but what about Georgia being left off of Painkillers? My goodness. Would have loved to hear that song with Butch's production and it would have totally fit in. What a chorus.
