He and his label have an interesting single release strategy, that's for sure. I thought the best songs on Painkillers were A wonderful Life, Among Other Foolish Things, Smoke, Rosemary, Red Lights, Long Drives, Honey Magnolia, and Open All Night. Outside of A Wonderful Life, he literally released the opposite of those as singles, lol.
The release of Painkillers was also unique for a Fallon-related project because his solo tour started like a month and a half before the album came out and he played all the new songs. Not to mention a few of them were reworked Molly and the Zombies songs. So having seen him live I knew what every song sounded like before hearing the album. While it makes the wait more painful, I'm hoping we just get this second single from Sleepwalkers and then nothing else till February (I don't have the self-restraint to choose not to listen to singles he releases).
I listened to the first single once since it had been a while since new music dropped, but I am avoiding future singles, and certainly Youtube before the album is released.
I’ll listen to this song as well, but any further singles I will not be listening to. I wish February wasn’t decently far away!
i will run each and every song into the ground the second it becomes available because i am a millennial dammit
Painkillers is a good example. I wish I hadn't heard "A Wonderful Life" before that record came out. "Nobody Wins" would have been my pick for the lead-off.
Can you tell us more about what the album sounds like and how you'd compare it to Painkillers both in terms of sound AND quality ??
A Wonderful Life was a fantastic first single. After coming off an album like Get Hurt, I think it showed Brian was in a good place personally. I’m glad he didn’t pick a Molly song. Also, Nobody Wins was a great song choice for a second single (first one catches your attention, second one keeps them there).
I still think that catchiest were Among Other...,Smoke,Rosemary and Red Lights. Also last minute of Open All Night is one of my favorite moments on album....personal opinion though
The last minute of Open All Night crushes me but it’s so great. I think that might be my overall favorite on the album.
I think it sounds like a natural progression. Brian's right on the money talking about the soul and R&B influences, but there's still a tinge of the Painkillers Americana to my ears. It definitely feels more like a Brian solo record than a Gaslight or Horrible Crowes album, which I had wondered about when Ted Hutt was announced as the producer. But it's more confident than Painkillers in a way that suggests he's getting more comfortable as a solo artist. I think it might be the catchiest hook he's ever written, or at least in the conversation. I'm always surprised when people don't love that one. P.S. "Nobody Wins" is probably the Painkillers song that would most fit on this record. I liked it as a single, I just don't like going into a record knowing the opener. It would bother me less in this particular case if I didn't feel like the following two songs were easily the weakest tracks on the record.
Among Other is so very catchy. Rosemary is like the sister song Here Comes My Man. Honey Magnolia turned out quite well after we hearing the live version before the album. Looking forward to all the new Brian songs. Anyone know if there will be any b sides to the album other than Forget Me Not’s acoustic version?
Really? That’s (pleasantly) surprising. I was initially getting the vibe that the new album was going in the direction of “Mojo Hand”.
I think Among Other Foolish Things and Smoke were by far the 2 catchiest songs on Painkillers. But I love the whole thing, songs 1-12, all of them.
"Mojo Hand" is the only one that never did anything for me. I always skip it and wish that "Georgia" had taken it's place.
I don’t know ...Mojo Hand still gives me a laugh just like when I heard it for first time...I didn’t expect that song at all haha and it’s just little funny thing for me...I never skip any of the Brian’s or GA songs...I just like them all
