American slang, white crosses, the monitor, hell heaven is whenever - 2010 was a good year for punk bands writing Springsteen cover albums
Saying Sink or Swim is their worst album isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it is still better than 98% of the stuff that is out there, imo. Like give me any Gaslight/Brian album before I have to listen to another god damn 1975 album
I said what I said. Lyrics for The 1975 can sometimes be okay but 95% of the songs on their albums are pretty bad and borderline worse than filler material. Plus Matty is an idiot outside of music, whereas Brian is not. That is a bonus for me.
Definitely. Jesse and Butch are buddies. And speaking of Bruce, there’s a song on the Jesse Malin album before this one that features a rare Springsteen feature.
Yeah I have disagreed vehemently with basically everyone in this thread, but it has inspired me to listen to Gaslight all afternoon, so that’s a good thing.
I get your point and agree that Diamond is a nice departure from their usual sound. However, I do find it funny that even when he goes for something different on that song, it's still VI-IV-I-V in the verses and I-V-VI-IV in the choruses. He's my favorite songwriter, but damn does he stick to his guns when he finds something that works haha
Yeah, wasn't trying to point to "Diamond" as some extra-sophisticated musical composition. It's more of a novel rhythmic approach for them, but it REALLY works in my opinioon. Guy's got punk roots and that's cool, just can make his songs sound similar. I think that's one of the reasons I gravitate to Elsie -- not sure if it's Ian's influence or what, but there are only 2 or 3 songs on that album that I would consider heavily Gaslight-indebted ("Behold The Hurricane", "Ladykiller", "Black Betty"). Meanwhile, the production and his vocal performance just gives it a totally different sheen.
That’s why, to me, American Slang is so perfect. It strays just enough from The 59 sound while also being unmistakably Gaslight
update on facebook I just saw on brian's page; Hi everyone, just a quick update. After a great deal of thought and discussion, I’ve decided to cancel my North American headline tour dates for Spring 2021. Refunds will be issued in the coming days to all current ticket holders, please reach out to your point-of-purchase with any questions or issues. Right now, this doesn’t affect the UK/EU tour this November and December. I’ll share further updates when I have them. Stay safe and try to take care of yourself and those around you.
