4 mediocre songs almost all in a row during the third quarter, when the rest of their discography is straight gold. Plus a lot of folks really don’t like some of the more grunge-y vocal/guitar tones.
Now I’m revisiting Get Hurt after midnight, my fiancé’s going to kill me. It’s been about 100 posts since someone talked about what an absolute anthem “1000 Years” is, so I’m going to bring it up again. Back-to-back with the title track is a heck of a thing... shows how they could’ve made Handwritten Pt II but decided to push themselves.
Get Hurt is a fucking beast of an album and it absolutely can stand toe-to-toe with the other 4 Gaslight albums. That being said, there are a few tracks I don't listen to from the actual version of the album, but there are a whole slew of fantastic bonus tracks, including one absolute all-timer in "Have Mercy", so it's all good. I really, really, really can't listen to the Painkillers version of Long Drives, and I really did try for years, but to me the Molly & the Zombies version of that song is perfect.
Stay Vicious is one of my least favorite Fallon tracks and Stray Paper is not great. The rest of it, including the bonus tracks, is terrific.
The one thing about me loving Get Hurt is I definitely just bought the deluxe iTunes version of the album when it came out and that is ‘Get Hurt’ to me. Have Mercy is absolutely a top two or three track on the record for me, and I can’t imagine it not being there. And actually, Halloween and Sweet Morphine are also top five on the album. So it’s possible the band just made really bad choices as to what to cut and what to keep on the final track list - those are all classic Gaslight songs for me.
Ah, relitigating Get Hurt again! I’ll say again that it’s a more fun album to think about and argue about than it is to actually listen to. It is not bad, but @Matt Chylak is right that there are some “eh” songs on there (based on where he says those songs are on the album, we might disagree on the actual weakest points) and they make a full play through of that album a less frequent event (for me anyway) than most of the Fallon discography.
it would be more listenable if they didn’t put a worse than karaoke attempt at stone temple pilots as the first song
The opener is definitely a stumbling block for me, and a song I've liked less and less over the years.
The Molly & the Zombies version of Long Drives is way better than the Painkillers version. Neither are screeching halts, however.

We should all be real and admit that their debut is their worst album. Which is a good thing! It was sloppy and promising! They got better!
And sure, I’ll party: 1. American Slang 2. Elsie 3. The ‘59 Sound 4. Handwritten 5. Sleepwalkers 6. Painkillers 7. Local Honey 8. Get Hurt 9. Sink or Swim not sure anyone else has that order
this feels like his Isbell record. he isn’t as comfortable in that sound and, frankly imo, not nearly as talented, but i think he can grow into that sound a bit more than what he’s been doing for the last decade and seemed to be pretty tired of
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? absolutely no.
