I think diversity suits him. I love that he did a record like Local Honey, even if it is still too short. Sleepwalkers is my favourite of his solo records though. I love that he could do a Gaslight record, than an Elsie. His ability to naturally expand the natural Brian sound is one of the things that has impressed me most. Hope the next record is longer and he can hit on even more elements of that magical spectrum he’s created musically.
Returned to Local Honey after getting the vinyl for the holidays and can't state enough how much I enjoy this album. I think if I had to rank Fallon albums, it would be in the top three for me: 1) 59 Sound 2) Elsie 3) Local Honey 4) American Slang 5) Sink or Swim 6) Sleepwalkers 7) Painkillers 8) Handwritten 9) Get Hurt
1. 59 Sound 2. Handwritten 3. Elsie 4. American Slang 5. Sink or Swim 6. Painkillers 7. Get Hurt 8. Sleepwalkers 9. Local Honey
I won't get too far into rankings, but I wouldn't put any of his solo stuff above Gaslight, except for Elsie which would probably beat out Sink or Swim. Shame this album never clicked for me.
Local Honey also sits at the bottom of my list for me. I think the album is fine. However, it doesn't do much for me in comparison to his other solo albums and Gaslight albums. That speaks more about how good his catalog is.
1) 59 Sound 2) American Slang 3) Sleepwalkers 4) Handwritten 5) Sink or Swim 6) Painkillers 7) Get Hurt 8) Elsie 9) Local Honey Agree that Get Hurt deserves better.
59 Sound American Slang Handwritten Elsie Painkillers Sleepwalkers Local Honey Get Hurt Sink or Swim Could swap Painkillers and Sleepwalkers depending on the day, but this is what I'm feeling right now.
I am at the point where I'm wondering what Brian will do next. Do we think his next album will be Local Honey Part 2, more like his previous solo albums, or something totally different?
Get Hurt is fine. I really enjoyed Local Honey. The 59 Sound was a cultural shift. (At least in my life!)
59 Sound Elsie American Slang Sleepwalkers Handwritten Sink or Swim Get Hurt Painkillers Local Honey but I truly love them all.
Wow did not expect so many people to be down on Local Honey. I feel like it’s the closest he’s gotten back to Elsie which is really where I would love to see him go. I don’t hate Get Hurt but it has the smallest number of songs I will randomly listen to out of all the albums. It just feels very scattershot to me
Brian is the one guy whose work I can’t rank. Every album is outstanding, and attached to specific emotions that mean the world to me. Even Get Hurt - I will go down swinging that it’s a 9/10 album. Brian Fallon records are amazing. All of them.
1. '59 Sound 2. Sink or Swim 3. Local Honey 4. American Slang 5. Elsie 6. Handwritten 7. Sleepwalkers 8. Painkillers 9. Get Hurt
I think for me this one finally felt cohesive, whereas his previous two solo albums felt like compilations of songs he had written/thought of before and decided to make an album out of it. I can listen to this straight through and it really captures a mood, whereas Painkillers screeches to a halt on 'Long Drives' for me, especially after the excellent 'Rosemay' and 'Red Lights'. Sleepwalkers is better but the middle of that album is all over the place.
